what is the best dvd player out

I say Pioneer 116 16x (either tray or slot--the slot has digital audio) because I own one  .

Home DVD players have built in decoders.
But don't think computer DVD drives do.

I also recommend the Pioneer 16x. I personally prefer the tray, though it has no digital out.

For the money you can't go wrong with the poineer 16x. I got one and no it does not go 16x but my 12x don't go 12x either. They are all a little over rated but even so the pioneer is one of the fastest you can buy. Miradex has em for $55 lousy bucks.http://www.miradex.com

When you talk about digital out, I take it that is the same digital out for CD-ROM drives used for connection to the sound card. Sorry but I know next to nothing about DVD drives.

Yeah, I think they mean an output straight to the sound card.
BTW, no DVD drives have a built-in encoder. There's no point right now, as software encoding works well, and most people have a good enough CPU to do it.

Apple? Macintosh? What are these strange words you speak?

The digital output on the back of the DVD drive is a 2 prong type, while the analog is the standard 4 prong, Were do you get the 2 prong adapter as I have not seen one anywhere?

If it works for you then don't fix it.
