What is the best processor for a toshiba satellite l305d-s5900

seems like I'm the only one who has one of these...Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5900, AMD TK-57 1.9GHz, 3GB ram. I was wondering if anyone has opted to upgrade the cpu in this model, I want to replace the TK-57 with a TL-60 or better. I know the motherboard socket is S1 an the TK-57 works 31 watts, I can get various cpu's with in the S1 socket format will a wattage diffrence be an issue, looking into AMD only and battery life dosen't matter to me, what is the mobo compatabillity? This laptop has been with me a while and has done things most Desktops only dream about, I opened her up recently and I'm pretty confident the swap will go well, I'm typeing this on the very same laptop...anything (even flames) would be great to see on this...

I upgraded my Laptop CPU a long while back. not the same platform, but as long as the socket is the same and the FSB (for that gen it still has one I think) is rated for the same speed, then you will probably be fine.

The worst case scenario is that the cooling system can't keep the CPU cool. I found that my upgrade from celeron 1.4 to a centrino 1.73 (Oc'd to 2.4 Ghz) was not a problem. Results may vary. Still using that old thing too.

I had a L305D. The worst part about it was that the CPU didn't seem well suited to laptop use. The machine had terrible heat managments (ran too hot). Gotta remember that this was just before the time that AMD started their drive to make proper low power chips. So my instinct says that the TL-60 is no doubt a better chip.

I sold mine to my aunt for a couple hundred, bought it for about six hundred, so it cost me about four hundred for two years. Main problem for me was that I compile a lot of code and the machine would shutdown.

I'm using a Toshiba L655 quad-core AMD 1.6G now. Much better heat management than the L305D. It's just amazing how much AMD improved their notebook processors in two years.

I just ran across this post on a forum (for those of you who may have an L305D and run Linux).

"The only thing required to get the fan to properly manage the CPU temp
was to add (without quotes) "acpi=Linux" to the kernel options at startup."


I'll have to add that to my aunt's config next time I do any maintenance on it.

Thanx sofar for the replys, I've been doing more research and found different chips that would be compatiable, starting with the already in there TK-57, I'm wondering would it be a strech to go with the TL-64 or TL-68, again same socket format just a diferance in wattage. The wattage differance would effect the battery life and temp I would assume, I had an issue with overheating it would run in the high 80's and shut down at 110... two days ago I opened her up and cleaned three years worth o dust off the heatsink 😗 now she runs high 40's under a medium load, overheating has been an issue but I have a setup that works for that...

it can be done tk-57 to a tl-64...it is beautiful...for those of you who wish to upgrade their cpu in this model toshiba satellite l305d-s5900 stock 1.9 amd athlon tk-57 1.9ghz, I have put a AMD Turion TL-64 2.2GHz in to it and I'm typing this post on the laptop right now...it has been done....proformance I'm waiting to see what the real differances are, with intergrated ati radeon x1250, it isn't gonna help that.


The thing that worried me the most about the switch, after physically seeing the tl-64 was the size 90nm vs the tk-57 65nm, sockets the same but the lithography was different, fits fine though, temps are running low 40'sc under medium strain, wanna take it slow at first before I try somethin crazy...well crazier...

Well it's still going, I haven't done any overclocking on it or anything. I play StarCraft II on it. Recently I put a 500GB HDD in it, and trying to get a 2GB DDR2 RAM dimm to finish all that I can do to upgrade this little beastie...Stock it had AMD tk-57 1.9ghz, 3GB RAM(1x2GB+1x1GB),250GB HDD 5400rpm, ATI Radeon x1250 GPU, I found out that this motherboard was used for most of the L305 series, just other models got better video. To date I've swapped the cpu and HDD, had multiple external HDDs on it converted video, played some intense games, went to Win8 cp/rp* and back to Win7. Modded: AMD tl-64 2.2ghz, still have 3GB RAM, bout to change, max supported for mobo 4GB (2x2GB), 500GB HDD(forgot the spindle speed, think it's 5400...hard to find 7200rpm), can't change the graphics...ran Win7 HP x64...went to Win8(worked perfectly) decided to go to Win7 Ultimate x86 cause mobo doesn't support more than 4GB o RAM...so I guess no nothing really crazier...pretty much parr, I did find out that there are more than one type o tl-64 they are about a year or so apart one(the one I got)TMDTL64HAX5CT was built on 90nm technology and the other one(G2)TMDTL64HAX5DC with 65nm build.

Hi, PLEASE Respond. I have a L305D-S5934 and was looking to put in the 65nm processor upgrade u reccomended. is my computer compatible, can i swap out processors, idk how to tell if this model motherboard supports that or not.

The motherboard you have might be V000138200, so I'm betting any thing that uses this mobo is compatible, I see the AMD Athlon™ X2 QL-64 is a slightly better go...you could try a AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile ZM-87 if ya wanted too...Toshiba offered the AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-62 as an optional processor upgrade.

Actually i called toshiba and they said that this particular model L305d-S5934 could not have the cpu upgraded as it was part of the motherboard..? is this true or do they just not know what they are talking about, since you seem to think otherwise?

the processor could be integrated to the motherboard,however I don't think it would be, I looked up the mobo it shows to have a S1g2 socket. however, if your looking to upgrade graphics that cannot be done(not by a simple swap) unless you find a mobo for that chassis with a better graphics chip...that part may be what they are talking about, as far as the processor I think a swap can be done on that model...for me this has been one grand experiment, first could I open my laptop up, second can I put it back together and it still work, third can I make it better...lol you guessed it I don't know what I'm doing, I just pretend really well(luck doesn't hurt either) as far as I can tell the mobo you have has the radeon 3100

Thanks guys, so is it worth it? I really do need better graphics. idk if i should just spend money on a new laptop or invest in this old one.

And im not sure what the limitations are of whatever motherboard i have. Really i was just hoping for a somewhat cheap upgrade, but i really dont think just the cpu will get it where i need it, the video card is really dated.

If you had to choose between 2 processors all around for my laptop and motherboard what would you pick. lol just help me out and narrow it down to 2 best choices for me please :)

and yeah im basically doing what your doing, ive gradually become really great with computers, although i never knew quite what i was doing.

For the fun factor it's worth it, if you want a better laptop, you might only get marginal performance improvements...it all depends on your budget and laptop needs, if you need it to play crysis 2 with max FPS you'll need a gaming laptop, if you just wanna run emulation programs or watch movies, the upgrade will do just fine, if your just gonna surf the web, check emai,l and play solitaire, well just any old laptop will do. As far as suggestions anything with a higher clock than your stock, turns out there Is a diffrence in mobo Chipsets and sokcets mine is aS1g1 I can only use S1g1 processors, the best one for me would be the TL-68 2.4Ghz.

well i wanted to at least run some emulators, I tried PJ64 and Dolphin this weekend, and my laptop cant keep up with SSBM on project 64 which isnt asking all THAT much.

Will this CPU upgrade alone help or is that where i need the graphics card too?

can u give me 2 processors btw?

yah running a N64 emu I've only gotten afew games to run at max FPS even on my less than horrible gpu, mostly I play older games on mine anything that requires 128mb gpu or less...

you need to find out what chipset your useing, if your useing a RM-70 processor now that means you have a S1g2 socket...so any one of the S1g2 processors will work...the best one will be the one with the highest clocks...looks like the ZM-88 would be the best upgrade option

I am trying to replace the cpu in my toshiba satellite l305d-s5900 laptop. I got the AMD turion 64 x2 TL-60, and when I put it in my laptop, I put it back together and pluged it in and it said it was charging. I went ahead and tried to turn it on, and I think it went through most of POST, but nothing ever pulled up on screen, the dvd drive and hdd light blink simutamiosly for about 4 blinks, and stops, and the charger and power light stay on for a while, then the power light goes out. I have no ideal what to do. I am going to try to take it apart agian and put in the old one and try to see if there is a BIOS update for it and see if that works, but I dont know. I dont know how to tell if I have a sg1sg2 or a sg1sg3 socket. If you could plz help, that would be great. Thanks in advance.
