What is the procedure for upgrading windows xp to professional on my laptop?

I want know if it is safe to upgrade from xp home to professional on my laptop and what the procedure is.

Just stick the disk in and it should detect your version and upgrade it.
As with anything a good backup should be done just to be safe.
