Question What is this NVMe M.2 2280 500GB PCI-Express 3.0 x2 SSD mainly used for ?

I am new to M.2 and Nvme and have read quite some materials on that. I think I know all the basics now.

And I found these 2 products selling online

These are M.2 NVMe M+B key SSDs.

I can infer that the short one is used on laptops. But what about the long 2280 one? What is it mainly used for?

I am being curious and want to know about some "history".

M.2 2280 drives are typically used in ordinary desktop PCs, as long as the motherboard has a compatible port. Capacities range up to at least 4 TB. Or you could put one in an enclosure outside the PC.

The 80 in 2280 refers to length in millimeters.

For any purpose...operating system, data storage, whatever.

But that particular WD SN500 of 500 GB capacity that you linked for $133 is an old model and ridiculously over-priced. Newer models in the same WD Blue line are a lot cheaper. Like the 550 or 570 or 580. I have an SN550 in an external enclosure that works fine.

It's used for data storage. The same way as any other SSD.
It can be used in laptops, desktops, external enclosures.

As long as there's space for it, length doesn't matter, desktop PCs have mounts for all 3 sizes.

I bought a WD Blue SN550 (500 GB) in 2021 and paid 48 Euro...I currently use it to run some virtual machines and it works very well.
