My rig, right now, is a i5 4570, gtx 760 4gb, 8gb ram, 600w psu, 500gb harddrive. I have the money and want to invest in a new part, but I am not sure which part I should upgrade. Should I go with a gtx 970, or should I go with an intel i7 4790k? I have the motherboard to overclock the CPU. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Solution
Your cpu i5 4570 is perfectly fine for any gpu present on this planet. If you want to upgrade it is surely your gpu and 970 has the best price to performance right now, you will see more than 60% increase in your frame rates.

You have not mentioned the exact model and brand of your psu but if it is running 760 without any problem than it will easily run 970 also as the 970(145watt) consume less power than 760(170 watt).
Usually, upgrading your GPU is great. However, don't push it too far - With that I mean; If you replace your GPU, your CPU might not keep up with the data coming from the GPU.
Also, to be on the safe side, you should upgrade your PSU aswell - Especially since the GTX970 is quite powerful. 600W might be just, just enough. But then there will be very little to no headroom for overclocking or further upgrades.

All-in-all, your build is actually very well balanced. So, if you want to get as far as a GTX970, you'll might have to upgrade both CPU and PSU.

But that's a 'might.'
Your system is very balanced by now. So, my advice; Do a little more research - Then make a conclusion what you should do.

Good Luck!

Would it be a safer route to upgrade, in order from first to last, the CPU, PSU, then the GPU? Also, would a 750 watt power supply suffice?

This will be my first upgrade to my first build, so I am still pretty new to everything. Thank you for the quick reply! It helps out tremendously!

Sorry for the double post.

Yes, if you want to be totally safe, I'd go PSU, CPU, GPU.
Just to be safe.
750W will be suffiecient, yes. Personally, I use a EVGA G2 750W PSU
Very great, never let me down.
So, I'd suggest getting an EVGA G2 750W, then perhaps a new CPU, then your GTX970.
The CPU though, is all up to personal preference.

Good Luck!

Then, I'd go for a PSU upgrade first. That isn't really capable to deliver power enough for a GTX970.
And, can't stress this enough, the EVGA G2 750W PSU is a great PSU (As said in earlier post).
750W will be plently. Especially since EVGA's PSU's are really efficient.
On the paper, this PSU will deliver 748W. Which is amazing.

Edit;
Or listen to Raheel Hasan ^^

Good Luck!

Thank you all for the feedback. Everything I've heard so far is being taken into consideration, but I'm going to do a little more research. If I have any more question I will look no further!

IF you PC is main purpose is gaming then GPU come as 1st upgrade, also you PSU will handle GTX 970 just fine it is less power hungry then GTX 760 but consider to upgrade after some time.Later you can get new mobo H97 or Z97 and after that 5th gen Intel CPU if you rly want it,but i dont believe that it will be some huge performance improvement. And ofc in the end RAM if you feel you need more.
