The controls were my main issue. Like Dead Space but worse. Also there were LOTS and LOTS of little scenes that were unskippable. Like slowly creeping through doors. I just didn't think it was particularly fun except in a few places. I'd die and quit playing for the night instead of reloading. :spamafote:

Dead Space was every bit as creepy as I remembered it. I'm about an hour into the second one.

I played Dead Space 1 and 2 way back. I still remember most of the details of the game because it was that interesting to me. I once started to play Dead Space 3 but I never got past the tutorial before I dropped the game entirely. I don't remember why. It's not that it wasn't good or anything, I guess I was just occupied with something else. I should give that a go again.

I started Evil Within too, a couple of months back. I just haven't played through it since. I had a good time though it felt hard to aim properly. It could be that my FPS is only around 35-45, that I feel like there's mouse acceleration involved. But when I checked online, it mentioned of no such thing. I missed several shots at point blank range which got me surprised and embarrassed.

It took me almost a month to finish The Evil Within and it was only about 18 hours. It engaged me enough to finish it but like I said, I didn't find it particularly fun.

Dead Space 1 and 2 are horror survival games. Dead Space 3 is more of a shooter. It was my least favorite of the 3. I would love to see a 4 though.

The controls aren't as bad as Dead Space 1 when playing on KB/M if you ask me. Dead Space 1 never got a proper mouse control scheme. It's why even when mouse sensitivity is set to max it feels clumsy just turning a corner, or especially turning around. There IS a workaround for it though. You just go to the device input file and set the max mouse sensitivity higher. You need a range anywhere from 2 to 5 times the default depending on your mouse DPI and your sensitivity preferences, but it makes it WAY easier to turn. The problem of aiming remains though, where center screen aim is sluggish and side aim shots are fast, due to the aim being schemed for gamepad toggles with dead zones. Fortunately they sorted out mouse control with Dead Space 2, but I'm still kinda pissed they never patched it in with DS1.

The main complaint on controls regarding TEW when I was chatting on the Steam forum for the game was matches not always burning corpses. I found it to be a non issue because it was simply a matter of being close enough for the match icon to appear, and of course getting there before they got up.

I guess we could go round and round on game design, but what I loved about TEW 1 was the AI are very smart and unpredictable, more so than any horror game I've played. They will keep running at you to the last point they heard you running, and you never know if they're going to swat at you when lying prone. I've seen some on the Steam forum insist stealth is broken in TEW 1, but honestly, those are people that haven't a clue how to deal with the sophistication of the AI.

Regarding TEW 2, sadly control wise things have gotten worse. They added a stick to cover system, and unfortunately it's buggy. It can take a while just to get stuck to cover and lined up properly for a cover takedown, but getting unstuck from it when you want to sneak out from it is even buggier. I believe it's because they made it so you can stay in cover around corners by pressing W when the arrow to do so appears. You CAN however move away from cover to get unstuck from it, but it's often slower than when using the stick to cover button works to detach from it, so it can screw up your timing.

TEW 2 is way too easy even without using the cover takedown skill, but with it, it's laughable, especially since the AI is so dumb anyway. I also don't like the open world design, because it seems just like an excuse to have you returning to the same areas over and over. The game has nowhere NEAR as much variety in level or creature design as TEW 1, and anyone who was put off by TEW 1 will realize that if they ever play TEW2.

Regarding the AI WAY dumber in TEW 2, they don't run very far to chase you, and all you have to do is run out of sight of them to lose them. It's like sound isn't a big part of their scripting anymore. The crafting system is more simplified too. Instead of disarming traps you just pick up weapon parts.

I hate to say it, but they did to TEW 2 the same thing Crystal Dynamics did to Tomb Raider when they went from Anniversary to Underground. The focus is now on graphics and one size fits all simplicity. Just like the relics and artifacts now lie out in the open in clay pots you kick or boxes you raid, the upgrade parts are just found, and not dynamic in use.

Dead Space was as smooth as butter with VSync turned off in the game and adaptive VSysc set at the driver level. A solid 60FPS and once you figured out you have to use small mouse movements the game is as good as any 3rd person shooter. I tried with no VSync and was getting 250+FPS but it broke the physics engine. It was so good it makes me think the last time I played I was doing something wrong.

I didn't have a problem getting a solid 60FPS in The Evil Within at max settings / 1440p with my 980 Ti.

I'm playing DS2 now. Literally beat 1 and started 2 immediately. 2 is better no doubt but with some tweaks 1 was better than the mess I remember it being.

Default VSync is 30 FPS. It looked like crap. VSync off got me 250 FPS+ but broke the physics engine. Setting adaptive VSync for the game at the driver level got me a buttery smooth 60 FPS. I also reduced the mouse sensitivity just a hair. I remember the first time I played it the game looked awful but that was almost 10 years ago so I don't remember what the settings were.

I finished COD Infinite Warfare. It had a surprisingly good campaign. Probably one of the best COD campaigns I've ever played. It's my favorite since Modern warfare 1. The story was pretty good and I actually felt connected to the characters. Usually I don't remember any of the character names in call of duty, but this one was quite memorable. You become the captain of a large ship, 'The Retribution' and you'll be able to return to it after completing every main and side missions. You can roam around the deck too, although there isn't much to do. But I got some mass effect vibes from it, which was nice.
There are small space battles in this game. They weren't on rails, but you were provided with a little bit of assistance when piloting the ships.
Overall, I had an enjoyable 7-8 hours from it.

Are there any Monster Hunter players on the thread?

I got back into Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate over the weekend. I hit my latest brick wall but I was enjoying it while the hunting streak lasted.

I take back what I said above about Dead Space 3. I really enjoyed it this time. Playing the 3 games back to back was great.

I started Wasteland 2 and I can't seem to quit playing. The original Fallout was considered a spiritual successor to the first Wasteland from the late 80s. Really fun game if you like turn based RPGs.

Yeah I feel people weren't fair about DS3 and bashed it too much, which was a big part of why it sold less copies. This hits home especially hard now that Visceral has been recently shut down, so there's no chance of EA continuing Dead Space anymore. The main complaints were too much action for a horror story, too complex weapon crafting, and too much love triangle bickering.

I felt the amount of action was good to avoid repetition and let the story evolve to more necro outbreaks. The writer of the first one said pretty much the same thing. I admit the weapon crafting had me confused at first, but once you get the hang of it, which doesn't take long, it becomes 2nd nature and quite fun. The silly love triangle dialog was rather off putting, but it's really only about 10% of the game dialog.

If you look at the pluses it brings though, it's a solid title. There's very good zero g segments in it, with vast space areas to find rare parts and optional missions. There are challenging dungeons to explore. It has more variety to the game world. The weapon configurations are vast, and even if you have issues with the crafting system, there's Classic mode where you can just use DS1 weapons.

Bloodborne and Dark Souls 2, I regularly repeat the game and try to clear bosses with different weapons and combat style. I enjoy giving myself a challenge by throwing in ideas like killing a boss without armor, with just the weakest weapon and so on.

I once tried just punching the Lost Sinner... it did not go so well.

Dead Space was great. never had any problem with keyboard controls or mouse dps issues, still plays fluid and nice with them today. liked it better than with the gamepad, like most games. it'd be nice to see a re-release with all 3 tied into one install with some transitional gameplay thrown in between them.
i have started Wasteland 2 three different times and have really enjoyed it but always end up taking a break to start something else newly released. then when i come back too much time has passed to remember most of the storylines. got to LA twice now. i will take a month or so and finally get through it sometime soon. also still need to finish The White March I & II and then PoE II.
i really love isometrics but these developers just aren't giving me enough time to finish anything anymore. these days have new games just stacking up in the library without even trying lots of them yet.

starting a new build for the new year:
got the Asus Z370E for cheap and a good deal on some G.Skill 16GB 3200 CAS 14. 8700K should be here by xmas. old Z97 board gave out so it's a good excuse to move up.

been playing The Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut, Victor Vran, and Titan Quest: Anniversary Edition on my laptop for the last week+.
glad you brought up Wasteland. i will be adding 1 & 2 to this laptop now that i'm thinking about it again. already have Fallout 1 & 2 on here.

You seriously didn't notice the difference in mouse control between DS1 and DS2?

Finished Wasteland 2 after about 65 very enjoyable hours. I'll play it again too. If you like turn based RPGs give it a shot. Especially if you got in the that recent Humble Bundle and haven't played it yet.

I picked up Homefront for free from Humble Bundle a couple of weeks ago. It's a decent, very short shooter. Terrible story. It might be worth the $5 it is now.

Now I'm playing Dead Age. It's a fun little side scrolling zombie apocalypse time waster.

Aliens Colonial Marines, quite dated now(2012) but still very enjoyable. It's my second attempt at this game and I'm still stuck at the same place, I can't kill all the aliens while waiting for one of the marines to bypass a doorway so we can all escape. That's still the end of the first stage I suppose and I'm playing at the second easiest difficulty. Frustrating but still enjoyable.
