When i unplugged my external hard drive i was still able to access the drive

when i unplugged my external hard drive i was still able to access the drive on my computer. is there a way that i can close my hard drive on my computer so that i can access another hard drive that i plug in. when i plug in another external hard drive, my computer does not recognise that there is another one plugged in, it still says that the other one is plugged in when it is not. can anyone help me out?

What happened when reboot the computer without plug in any external hard drive, can you still access the unplugged external hard driver?
What kind of connection is the external hard drive use?

Did you use the Remove Hardware Safely thingy in the icon corral at the right of the task bar? (I just forgot what it's actually called. Anybody?)

NEVER just unplug USB devices!

Always Safetly Remove them buy clicking on the icon in the system tray (next to the clock on the bottom right of your screen).
