When renaming files on desktop then moving to next file on desktop it instead goes to recycle bin

Hi, this problem just started this week probably from the latest update. I download files on my desktop to name them and put them in the correct folder. When you download a file it starts from left to right up to down so that is how they show up on the desktop as I download them. I always start with the latest file and move down to the next file with the down arrow key to rename. Suddenly when I rename one file and go to move down to the next file it instead moves to the icon just below the recycle bin at the top left of the desktop instead of the file just below the last one. This is incredibly disrupting when trying to rename all of my files. Is there a fix to this issue? Thank you for your time.

If you want to work in same way as before, and if it indeed is a Windows update that is causing the change in behavior - the steps forward is to notify Microsoft about this and hope the fix will come at a later point.

But, I'll rather recommend you using another folder for downloads than the desktop, because the icon handling on desktop may behave different compared to file explorer.

Yeah this is most likely going to be an update fix I assume. I tried posting on the Microsoft forums but it wouldn't let me saying I was flooding the forum trying to post to many times. I haven't posted once cause it wont let me! I'll just use a folder for downloads, thanks for the reply.

And I am wondering about this:

"I download files on my desktop to name them and put them in the correct folder."

What is the reason/requirement driving the need to rename the files?

How is "correct folder" being determined?

I understand that some original/default file names can be cryptic, generic, or otherwise do not represent the contents of the file.

Are you able to provide some examples of how filenames and/or extensions are being renamed?

To be specific:

Where did you get the file?

What is the file name? What is the file type?

What name do you wish to give to the file? Why?

More information needed.

Good question. I see for myself that long time without Windows at home have some "downsides" - I've forgotten some of the weird ways Windows deals differently for different file types.

So the files may be a "special kind" of files, such as .lnk or the files have an extension that is hidden in file explorer. This can really cause a mess in any attempt to rename files.

Also - other file systems/containers may allow characters that Windows doesn't allow in file naming - or there may be used Greek or Cyrillic letters that isn't easily distinguished from Latin characters.
