Which AMD CPU to buy?

I am a noob! Looking to build my first computer. Not sure what AMD processor I should go for. I am leaning towards the X2 family of the Athlon but wondering if I will face any compatability issues down the road with that choice. Are there any known issues with software/hardware compatability due to the dual core design? The computer will be mostly used for games/net/Msft Word/Excell/Photoshop.

So far I have the following components:
TT Kandalf case
PC P&C Turbo 510 SLI
Asus A8n32-SLI
WD 74gb Raptor X2 (Raid 0)
XFX 7800GT x2 (SLI)

So I need to narrow down the choice of the CPU and memory. Your comments/help would be appreciated!

If you have the money for a X2, go for it...you will definitely enjoy to run multiple apps at the same time. There should not be any compatibility issues...although a intel fanboy might try to tell you this.

I would also go for an x2. Get the fastest you can afford or just get the 3800 and overclock it. The dual core will help you last longer until the am2 socket is more mature and bugs and kinks worked out.

i would say change the dual 7800gt to a single x1900xt, it should be about the same price and own dual 7800's.

on my new one i'm getting a 3700 and when prices fall for dual cores in a year, i'll get an fx60 or something

as for ram i'm getting ocz el platinum 2-2-2-5 ram

i do not think it is worth it to get AMDx2 get a 3700 it is fast enought for anything you need to do also you will have to pay big bucks to get the same speed as the 3700 plus it has got the same core as the FX57 San Diago and in most games is 10fps slower also i will agree with corvetteguy saying get the x1900xt.

How important is Photoshop? If it's not 30% of your workload, get the 3700.
I also agree that you should get the 1900 gfx card. The in case heat reduction would be a major consideration in my books.

for some reason i don't like this buzzword X2 for amd, i'd go for an Opteron 165 or 170. the 165 is at 1.8Ghz and the 170 is at 2.0Ghz and both can be overclocked as high as the FX60 at 2/3 less the cost. But don't take it from me, im a gamer and hooked into this Opteron scene from articles on forums. I just hope my purchase of the 170 will make things smooth in DODS and RO

this is a good proposal for an article about this, but it probably won't see the light of day because AMD wouldn't want it leaked out. Just like in Good Morning Vietnam when Robin Williams was taking those reports and reporting: "this didn't just happen, a bomb blew up at..." and those two twins came in all pissed off... but if it did, it would be nice: either way, i needed an upgrade about now... Dual channel RDR isn't cutting it for me in DOD: S

if an overclocked 165 @ 2.6Ghz performed THE SAME as an FX60 in gaming, mainly in the very CPU for-higher-FPS-dependant HL2 game, there might be reason to cover this debate up
