Hello there I'm looking to get a processor and the 2 I am looking at are

Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz E6300 Processor or
Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition - AD785ZWCJ2BGH

I was just wondering what one was gonna be the better choice. and what peoples thoughts are on them.

I know, I know i should just go out and spend the money and get a good processor but its my only options atm.

I would not get either. I am not sure about how those are your only two options. The e6300 you listed is the older e6300 and not the Pentium version. The AMD is a dual core orginal Phenom.

I am not sure how these are your only two choices and what boards they are coming with or what boards you already had.

Even though the AMD is a black edition it is a Phenom 1. There overclockabilty is terrible. You would better off with a K8 dual core compared to those.

What mobo are ya getting? If the amd limits you to phenom I and not phenom ii, and the other let's you get c2d/q you might be better off going intel. A slight oc would be something to look into if you get the intel cpu.

the AMD is an AM2+ socket- can drop it in a board that will later take a Phenom II. Only thing it will limit is sticking with DDR2, which isn't really a problem.

You would need to be able to overclock that core 2 1.86GHz to at least 2.5GHz to make it worth it vs the Athlon. Taking into account the Athlon being able to overclock, you would need to get the core 2 to at least 3.2GHz for it to be worth it. That's an FSB of over 450Mhz. I highly doubt he'll get that stable if at all. And I would hardly call either a slight overclock.

If you do decide to overclock the Athlon BE, play around with ACC (Advanced clock calibration) in the bios if you get an ATI board. It seems to allow further overclocks on the older phenoms. (the Athlon with the Kuma core is based on the phenom)

I was going off of that, not 2.5. I didn't expect him to take it higher than 2.4. :)

I meant that the Core 2 duo at 1.86 GHz would match the Athlon if the Athlon were at 2GHz. not the Core 2 duo.

Anyone have benchies of the original E6300? I'm pretty sure its faster then a dual core first gen Phenom. The PhII is roughly C4C equal to the Core2 arch, and even then its still a bit behind. PhI would be even slower. My advice would be to get the E6300.

As I said before core 2 at 1.86 will perform like a phenom athlon at 2.0. But we are dealing with a 2.8 phenom athlon. The phenom 1 would certainly not be that much slower. Especially considering it is basically the same as the phenom II but on 65nm.

Consider this article where they pit the Athlon 7850 against the E5300 based on the core 2 architecture. It has the same amount of cache as the E6300 but is 45nm and at 2.6GHz.

They exchange blows but the E5300 generally wins out. Perhaps the core 2 1.86GHz will perform more like the athlon at 2.1GHz.

The other reviews of the 7850 support those results when comparing against similar core 2 duos.

Actually the phenom and phenom II architecture are closer than you think... I actually think the only difference is 45nm vs 65nm. The phenom II is not C4C near the core 2 but falls behind similar to the phenom.

Ah I get ya now, thought it sounded a little extreme. Id expext a 400mhz difference to even it up but I could be wrong.

+1 phenom 1 (haven't heard that in a while)

I don't see how you can compare across platforms like that. Compare it to an Intel chip. You should be comparing it to another intel chip, one of the 21xx?. Make small adjustments for double the cache and the faster FSB. Its probably a hair faster then the 2180/2200. (this puts it behind the 7850) Looks like I was wrong.

Ummm, no. I suggest you read about the PhII arch. Big differences.

none of those 2 proc.

I suggest for intel if you wanna use 775 socket get the dual core e6300 ( pentium dual core @ 2.8 )

or core i3 530 but thats a more expensive

if amd then Phenom II x2 555 @3.2GHz with 6MB

the price is $101 for the Phenom2 555, about $76-78 for the 2.8GHz E6300, and $124-126 for corei3 530

He said the processor is free. I certainly think a free Athlon 7850 is a good deal.
Core i3 runs on socket 1156 not 775.

By the way, what do you plan to use this computer for?
