Which is the best for gameing?

these are the only two options i have for a custom built laptop im ordering which is Intel Core i7 990X 3.46GHz LGA 1366 Hex-Core Processor (12MB L3 Cache) or Intel Xeon X5690 3.46GHz LGA 1366 Hex-Core Processor (12MB L3 Cache) so which one is best? all im going to do with this laptop is game and its a no budget project. do these cpu have turboboost technoloy? can they be overclocked? pros and cons of them? which has the best speed/performance? which one is right for my needs? which is the best of the best for gameing?

Hi and welcome to Tom's forum.

1- Both are old socket CPUs, so, in that case I would go with the 990X since the Xeon is oriented to server segment and not performance segment.
2- No, can't be overclocked (at least not in a good margin) and the temps on those CPUs in a laptop will be high.
3- 990x is the best IMO, like I say both are good but oriented to different segments.

I would go with the 990x because it is more of a desktop CPU, not a server CPU as the xeon CPU is. It may give more performance. As for overclocking, you won't get a very good overclock because you are using a laptop. I do not believe either has Turbo Boost though. Sounds like a great computer though! 6 core packed in a laptop! If I were you I would go with a 990x.

I wouldnt advise the Intel® Core™ i7-990x Extreme Edition or the Intel Xeon® x5690 to be used in a laptop at all. Both of these processors have a 130w TDP (Thermal Design Power) basically the amount of cooling that the processor needs to keep running cool. A normal laptop might expect to use a 45w TDP processor like the Intel Core i7-2720QM.

expect battery life to run out very fast, I would get rid of the 990x and get a i7-2860qm, and upgrade the gpu

1333Mhz is fine, but I would bet you could run faster memory, Intel just specs em for 1066 and 1333.

both them top side cpu's are way to much for a laptop. even if its a custom build. battery life will be in the order of minutes not hours and of coarse if your putting such a high end cpu in, your likely to want decent graphics 2. again murdering battery life...

if you dont need to be mobile then consider putting all that into a desktop. it will be cheaper, and perform better, due to it being allowed to use decent cooling. there is no cooler currently available that will effectively cool a 990x or xeon in a laptop. so you will never see the true potential of the cpu.

why would you even need this? You could build a way better desktop for the price, plus you can't be mobile because the laptop is going to run out of power.

I see no reason to even try having that in a laptop, you'll NEED to sit at a table/desk while plugged into an outlet to use the thing. That processor alone consumes twice the power of most laptops, and I've got no idea what else your having put in there.

But as far as I'm aware those are the same exact processor, just one sold with the Xeon name and one Core I7 name for desktop use.
