Any suggestions/recommendations from people who have actually played both? This will be my first MMORPG and I've narrowed it down to these two. The main draw to SWG is the possibility of becoming a Jedi and the high level of character customization. Also, it has better graphics. However, DAoC is stable and costs much less (both for the prog and the subscription). AAAARRGH! I can't make up my mind.

i havent played both, but i'd go with cost. i dont think theirs anyone out there yet that has really changed the 'everquest' formula enough to warrant $15 a month.
You can get DAOC for $30 with the expansion, and the other expansion is a free download.
I play everquest on a friends account for free and thats really what you need to look for, because they are all about the same thing really. (pay every month to sony or whoever)

Athlon 1700+, Epox 8RDA (NForce2), Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB 8MB cache, 2x256mb Crucial PC2100 in Dual DDR, Geforce 3, Audigy, Z560s, MX500

I just started playing DAoC in May and also just bought SWG last Friday. I would go with SWG. DAoC and the other MMORPGs are mostly based on combat (melee or magic or nanos or beam weapons, oh my!) and leveling up your character. SWG isn't based around this. If you want to play as someone who builds droids for a living you can, if you want to be a chef you can, if you want to be a bounty hunter you can. I've spent most of my time so far playing in bands in different cantinas, and it's been fun (although I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone). In addition your character doesn't level up, just your skills, so you don't have to worry about finding others of the equivalent level if you want to group. They have taken the standard MMORPG formula, tweaked it and expanded on it. Granted, the game hasn't been out a week, but it seems there are more possibilities in SWG than the other MMORPGs that I've played (which include EQ, E&B, AO and DAOC). Plus the graphics are darn good (if that counts for anything). On the downside I have had problems getting in, not major problems, but it has taken me about 10-15 minutes to log in on some occasions. Also, I haven't been able to get into the character creation screen since Saturday, I don't know if or how this is affecting new players or if anyone else is having the same problem. (You're allowed 10 characters/account, only one per server, which some have taken issue with, but as the in-game economy is player based I think this was done to prevent a player from owning a resource gatherer, a crafter and a merchant, thus their own production line). Besides, who doesn't want to see a dancing Wookie?

Only one character per server would be a big reason I woudnt get it. I play Asheron's Call One and you get 5 characters per server. I like to play different character types. I mean once you find a nice clan on one server why would you want to spread yourself to 10 different servers and not be able to play with all your friends on your primary server. Just to play one character type for me would be boring.

Of course the most important thing is the online community and the people you play with. All the bells wont matter if the community isnt good.

Well thanks for the comments guys. I think I've realized it's just a matter of opinion. Everyone likes something different. What bugs you about one game may be something I love about it, and vice versa. With that said, I went with SWG because it seems like it will fit my style more (not into the whole leveling up scene). Another reason I picked SWG is because I like the idea of being there from the start to see how the game grows & evolves. Most every other MMORPG out there right now already has one or more expansion packs meaning the game has already changed signifigantly since its' initial release. Well, again, thanks for the comments...hopefully I'll see some of you in SWG.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. I've got two characters, a Twi'lek by the name of Tohn'Tik (my main) on the Ahazi server and a Wookie named Eqe (there's a song in there somewhere) on the Tarquinas server.

Enjoy!

Dunno if it makes a diff to ya, but you can relinquish skills and try others any time you want. So even though you only get one toon, you can try different things with no penalty.
