A chipset is a group of integrated circuits ("chips") that are designed to work together, and are usually marketed as a single product. In computing, the term chipset is commonly used to refer to the specialized motherboard chips on a computer or expansion card.

So basically, yeah, chipset=motherboard.

Like i said before i'm waiting for more models from other manufacturers arrive to newegg...

If you are in a rush and really need the mobo right now, go for the Nforce 6100, 6150 or the Nforce 500 up, depending on your needs.

Since i want to build a cheap, reliable, durable HTPC capable PC, with room for other improvements in the future, and since time isn't much of an issue for me, i'll wait for the AMD 690 chipset.

The Nforce chipsets are really nice value for the money but they don't support well Aero glass Vista out of the box (you will need to buy a low profile graphic card).

Now remember the Nforce 6100, 6150 chipsets have Integrated graphics, the Nforce 500, Nforce 4 SLI doesn't

Keep in mind your needs.
Will you be buying a 3d graphics card for gaming?
Will you overclock?
or will you only be using your pc for web surfing, watching videos, movies, documents writing, etc

never forget your needs and your budget before expending money.
always read reviews of the product you are going to buy too, and I'm not referring to Newegg reviews. You should read full fledged reviews with comparisons and benchmarks.

Well, I've narrowed it down to two mobos. I really can't tell which one is better. I would really like it to be perfectly vista compatible. (i've heard of so many vista compatible stuff that does not really live up to its name)

In addition, I do want some gaming since I do use my computer for about 50 percent movies/media, 20 percent gaming, and the other 30 percent would probably be music and more media. I'm just aiming for a multi-purpose system. .

I would like to over clock, but i dont know much about it (or how to do it especially) I will and probably over clock later within half a year of this computer's purchase.

So final question, please tell me which one of the two would be the best to fulfill my needs?

I will probably not upgrade my computer parts for another 5 years or so.

Much thanks Zero

(Btw, is this power supply sli ready? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817153028)

Personally I would go with the Asus MB, Friends do not recommend ECS to Friends. Both are very close feature wise.

NO the PSU is not SLI ready, and it might not push a high end GPU either. Rails are 14 and 15 Amps. Look for 20A and 30-35 total.

Go to the link, click on specifications and about 10 lines down it reads
SLI Support NO
and the line above that says
PCI-E Connectors NO
so if you run dual AGP or older PCI graphics cards then it might work.
Your friends are correct that the second MB has a few more features. ECS is also on the bottom five among MB that are returned DOA and so on. (no bottom is not good, only PC Chips are worse from the forums I read. I know alot of people use them when they get them free from Fry's. By free I mean the price of the CPU is the same as the price on Fry's combo deal.

okay then, if thats the case, I much rather get the Asus mobo then. However, which one of the PSU should I get? My friend says its not worth it to go SLI when you can just get a much better graphics card for cheaper?

You will hardly notice a performance increase by going SLI, unless you are going to run 1600x1200. Then you would only go SLI.
