I have a BFG 7800 GTX OC right now, and im thinking of upgrading to a SLi setup, but im also quite interested in purchasing a 7900 GTX 512 MB OC BFG too. I was curious which setup is better; a dual 7800 gtx one or a single 512 meg 7900 gtx. Im just interested in pure speculation, u dont have to post if u have one of these setups (Or BFG specifically), just say what u think :)
Thanks in advance.

i have dual 7800gtx's and my junk still skips on most of the games i play. :x
I ran one card and really didn't notice a difference. Little higher 3dmark score but thats it

call of duty 2, counter strike source, and guild wars play fine.

time shift, HL2, EE2, and a few others skip like crazy.

I use a 20" CRT which maxes out on 1600x1200. The funny thing is, some games run perfectley on my machine: like HL2-i set everything to max and i can honestly say i never got below 30 fps. Games like FEAR work well too, but at max settings and max res skips just a tad bit from 10-25 fps. To be honest with you, im more or less content with the game preformance, the only reason im writing this is that im afraid that oblivion will ravage my pc if i try to put it up to 1600x1200 res. (My motherboard was fried by a static shock, so now im getting it replaced so i cant play oblivion to actually find out what it is like) If anybody has any experience with how good oblvion is optimized, and what kind of resources it needs, please tell me, im really worried bout it.

P.S. I run low latency 2x512 OCZ Ram (not sure if its DDR or DDR2) asus a8n sli premium, manchester 4000+ X2 and one 300 gig drive.

Before i forget, im content with everything bar BF2-everytime i join a map it lags like crazy first, then, after 1 round, it becomes as smooth as an ice cream, does anybody get a similar problem?

I play BF2 a lot with virtually the same card (XFX 7800GTX Extreme XXX @ 490/1300 - factory OC), and don't have the problems you have. However, BF2 is known for being a memory hog, and you really need 2GB to experience it at it's best. My guess is that the system is paging initially due to lack of memory - you may notice some disk activity when loading.

In order to get the best frame rates, I don't play at my normal res (1600x1200), but at 1024x768 with medium-high settings. However, reducing the quality is unlikely to solve your problem. Most ppl would recommend 2GB for this game.

I've also tried Sli with 2 of these cards, and whilst I had some problems setting it up, I didn't notice that much of a difference in performance. I have no firm measurements on this however.

I have also seen a lot of reviews which state that any noticeable improvement in performance is very much dependent on the game you are playing. Some games even perform worse with SLi. I don't know if this is related to the drivers or the way the games themselves are programmed.

Just my opinion, but I personally wouldn't consider Sli again unless there was a proven improvement in performance across all games and applications.

these guys are right the memory makes all the diff in the world
especially in bf2 i have an sli mobo but with one 6800gt it is not feasable
to buy another for the same price as the new 7900gt i also had 2 512s
for a while and added 2 more and the diff was night and day
i have my 3700 sandy core overclocked to 2.61 and didnt see anydiff
when i overclocked the 6800gt my 3dmark05 score went from 5000 to
5849 but that is in a video benchmark could not see any diff in games
the verifing client data and loading of bf2 times where cut in half
with the extra memory
or from the time i tourn on my computer wait for it to load everything
and start bf2 now less than 5 mins to be on a map and playing
with just 2 512s about 12 to 15 mins or a little longer
so for me the memory made the biggest diff ive seen

I'm running 2Gb of corsair xms2 pro ddr-800/pc6400

I think the ram should be fine. I have no clue whats causing my skipping probs. i run everything at 1280x1024

The 7900gtx is 150 $ cheaper than the 512 7800 gtx so sell your 7800 and go 7900 gtx 😀 and alot better with Anti alising but two 7800 is tempting and will be faster . You coose , Dam I want one !!!

well then, i believe ill be buying a 7900 gtx, i think i might sell it on ebay, or here, directly, (btw if anybody is interested, im willing to sell it for 350 bucks-not right now, but pretty soon most likely), but still i would like to find out just what kind of a PC do u need to have to run oblivion at good framerates.

dude i dont get you guys, i mean whats the point of upgrading your card? i mean its not an fx or something or even like a 6800ultra .just sit back and enjoy it.:)

its a thing called an upgrading bug; usually gets to you when you first build your own system.

P.S. The difference in a 7900 GTX 512 megs from just a 7800 GTX is huge, and i dont believe ill be wasting my money. Plus, ill be able to buy a second one for sli; can u imagine how good would 1 gig of vram look like?
