which P4 2buy when Northwood's not available?

Hi

Building a brand new PC for a friend of mine who's 3D Rendering (Maya) and Photohosp fan, I want to buy a P4C 3.0 / 3.2, but every shop arround here are running out of Northwood. Even in China where i asked a friend of mine to lurk @ San hao jie (computer mega store in China's cities) there's only Prescott !
So what P4 socket 478 are we gonna get 4 my friend ?

We allready bought :
- Asus P4P800-E-Deluxe (115 EUR)
- GeForce 6600 GT - 128 Mo - AGP 8x- TV - DVI (190 EUR)
- NEC ND3520A - DVD±R 16X : (60 EUR)

I may can't find any P4C higher than a 2,8GHz :-(
Which one would you advise us to get for 220 EUR max, knowing that the less he spend for CPU, the more he can spend for RAM (and O/C is not a determining factor)?

After days of researching, here are some CPU & prices that i know they should be available in a few days arround here :

- P4 3.20GHz/800Mhz/0512Ko HT - Box ... 260 EUR

wusy I'd like that as it means affordable + available CPU (and better RAM).
I also have read here on THG that O/C a PC that is used for 3D rendering (or stuff like Video editing) will cause kind of errors. Therefor my question.

Anyway, everybody here also say a P4C 3.0 (or 2.8) gently o/c will make it better than a P4E 3.0 or 3.2GHz ?

It would be better in that it wouldnt get as hot as the 3.0E. As far as performance running them at the same speeds im not sure. I have a 3.0E but never have owned a Northwood. I dont thin that your really going to see a huge performance boost by mildly OCing the CPU. It doesnt sound like that you really need to or are concerned with OCing anyhow. As for stability, anytime that you change something from its original or intended specs you run into the possibility of some instability. I dont know anything about video rendering, but in general I would think that you would gain the most performance benefit from getting more RAM. How much RAM does the program require?

All the Nortwood "C"s will go over 3.0GHz stabley. Even the 2.4C at 3.0GHz runs cooler than a 3.0E.

I just got a 2.8c and its running @3.5 at the mo, I have run prime95 for about 2hours and its stable so far.
I would def go for the 3.0c, the prescotts give you little to no performance increase and are just too hot.

Choice now is between P4C 3.0 or 2.8 such as :

---> 160+190+40+12 = 402 EUR

Check the ASUS website and look for the Vendor compatibility list for RAM on that particular MOBO that you have. I briefly looked at it, and I think that the Corsair was listed but I dont remember seeing the others. Corsair is a very beloved patriot brand, I have Corsair Ram in one of my setups. The thing about the approved vendor list is that it tells you the different brands of RAM that have been tested and work with each board.

Well, mozzartusm I went on Asus website and was unable to find such a list. Have searched for "certified" with _no_ results !?
Actually I managed to get the P4P800-E Deluxe manual, with a "List of certified [RAM models] brands". But can't be sure wether it was recently updated

Plizz Does anyone give a link to Asus (P4P800-E Deluxe) Vendor compatibility list for RAM ?

I thought the timings were a little loose - how does it compare to the <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-299&depa=1" target="_new">Mushkin Dual Pack model #991145</A>? The mush seems to have tighter timing, but I'm not sure how their performance compares. How do they compare non-OC? OC?

Thank you for the advice. I'll try to check the Geil against Asus recommandations (whenever i find 'em =o)
Actually i just bought 3 x 512MB of that model (but single channel, $55 each) in China.
A problem is that neither French nor chinese sites barrely ever say which model is that component (especially true for RAM). All they write is, say, "Geil Value 1Go DDR PC3200 Dual Channel 209 EUR" with no s/n !-(
Actually, I bought a P4 that i thought was a Northwood, and realized it was a Prescott only when i read the bill (sent it back, waiting 'em to give my money back). They wrote "P4 0.13 microns" on their web page... and "P4E" on the bill #-[

Guys, remember this PC is build for 3D rendering performances. So we need a lot of good RAM. CAS 3 will make it better than tighter timings !

How far do you think a s754 3000+ or 3200+ would go stably with one of those? By stable I mean, good for everyday usage, folding and moderate gaming?

I agree. The 3.0C with the MO stepping would be sure to please! The BEST BUY in the P4 world right now. 3.75ghz at stock Vcore!

It looks like that mobo main guide's list, with less models but updated ones. There was only 1 corsair on the main guide list, as an exemple

Right now I'm still finalizing what I want in my comp. Trying to maximize the price/perf/stability factors with some OC thrown into the mix. The other RAM that I'm seriously considering is the <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-220-006&depa=1" target="_new">Patriot PDC1G3200LLK</A>. I'm just not convinced that the extra $50 will provide me a good return on the investment in OCing a 3000+/3200+ beyond 2.45. I'd say that the extra 450Mhz out of a 3000+ with stock cooling and ValueRAM is a good ROI. That's a total savings of about $100 over getting the PDP with a 3200+. The interesting thing would be to see how far I can take the 3200+ stably with the PDP, stock cooling and not splitting the HTT/RAM divider. Then later getting another better HSF - possibly the Zalman - and seeing how much further it would go with the better cooling. Whatcha think?
