Which thing is limiting my overclocking?

I'm running a Duron 1 GHz @ 1.1 GHz (220 MHz FSB, stock 1.75V), ABIT NF7 2.0, 1 x 128 MB Generic PC2100 CL2.0 DDR (running @ PC1760 2.0-2-2-5). Using very cheap coolermaster hsf (alluminium based, no copper tip), without thermal pad/grease. Ambient temp 31C, mobo themp 40C, CPU Temp 50C (under full load @ 1.15 GHz)

My PC is 100% stable at 1.1 GHz. But when I go for 1.15 GHz, then the system is not stable. I got infinate loop after 1h 45min running prime95 in background, scanning all drives with NAV 2002 and playing ogg vorbis files with winamp. No BSOD, btw.

Which thing is limiting me? CPU Cooling, CPU voltage, Generic RAM or the CPU itself?

Well your ram shouldnt be limited, as its running BELOW PC2100 speeds. (might want to check with memtest86 though, or run relaxed timings for a while)

PCI/AGP locked at 33/66 i assume.
So i would say its probably CPU cooling related, as well as possibly voltage limited.

Was that particular duron core well known as a good overclocker?

no duron cores are great at overclocking...some better than others...

I am assuming you have tried to increase the cpu's vcore?

How did that effect the overclock...

If i put my k6 in a Ferrari it would be faster than your your pentium 4 or Athlon XP :tongue:
 
I haven't tried overvolting.

My CPU cooling is very ordinary, so I haven't tried it yet

oh...common man...pump up da voltz...hehe...

Really old cpus (larger transistors) could really take alot of volts...my .18 micron pIII can take 2.05 volts no sweat (from a 1.65 stock)...i am not recomending going that high...but in order to get anything out of that cpu i had to pump it up...i know that they are very different cpu's but without overvolting your cpu is really not gonna reach its potential...slap some thermal greese on there too...

How long the CPU will survive @ 1.85V (with my current cooling setup)? This CPU is already 16 months old

what is the stock voltage...if the stock is 1.8 it should last for a while...i mean as long as it does not go above 60c under full load you should be fine...

the pIII i was overvolting was 2 or 3 years old...and it has lasted just fine...have been overvolting for a month...

hmmm. if its just stock cooling then it might be ok at 1.85v... will get a tad hot though.
If you get heat related lockups then shouuld not run at 1.85v. Give it a try and see what happens.

I think my cooling setup is worse than the retail cooling

spitfire just go for it...if it locks up no harm done...

Your cpu will have to hit over 100c to do any damage to it...

if it hits 60 or 65c...just back off...1 day running 65c will not kill a cpu...or significantly shorten its life...

yep. I know mine doesnt like it wehn i leave the CPU fan unplugged for 2 hours! :evil:

Still ran though! Even gaming for an hour!
Got a tad toasty though.

at night i unplug my cpu fan sometimes...i have a huge heatsink from a passivly cooled pII 233 on my PIII...even at 2.05 volts...my pIII 700 can run 55c or less on just a passive heatsink...i am very happy with my cooling solution...

I only hope there is a way to adapt it so that i can use it on a slocket...so i can run an overclocked tualatin passivly...that would be nice!

hehehe no... this was a overclocked TbredA XP1700+ @ 1750Mhz & 1.7v for 2 hours with no fan.

Fortunately i DO have a bigass MCX-462. Which adsorbed all the heat well.

hmmm...

prolly would have been best if you had a cup of water on it too...that has amazing thermal capacity...

hmm...i think the A's ran a tad hotter than the b's...right?

heh. the copper block of the MCX-462 was burningly hot... and when i reconnected the fan it took almost 5 minutes to cool back down to normal levels.
ALOT of latent heat.
No damage done though. very nice.

And yes the tbredA's wernt as good... my XP1700+ can only really get up to 1833mhz... and its not 100% stable. 1750Mhz is really stable and runs cooler.

I'm posting this now from 1.15 GHz @ 1.80V. Running prime95 since last 50 mins. CPU Temp is ~53C (full load)

Overvolting worked like magic!

My system is now running prime95 since last 7 hours. CPU temp went up to 54C after 5 hours.

Will try 1.2 GHz tommorow with same 1.8V

I assume you are talking about the Morgan core Durons only. The old Spitfire core Durons were champs at overclocking. My old Duron 600 overclocked to 1007 Mhz, a 68% overclock, with a lowend HSF (by today's standards).

It ran for a couple of years at that speed until I gave it to my nephew and downclocked it to only 900 Mhz. (Didn't think his family would put up with a noisy fan).

The Duron is still going strong, now three and a half years old.

Hey...i have always been confuzed by the 2 diffrent cores...

what speeds were the morgans released at and what speeds were the spitfires at and which one had smp enabled?

Spitfire cores ranged from 600 Mhz to 950 Mhz (maybe it was 1000 Mhz).

Morgan cores range from 1000 Mhz up to 1300.

Don't know about SMP. I thought a mod was needed on either core but you'll have to ask someone else.

There was a SMP enabled Duron in AMD Roadmap in the past, but AMD never made it.
