hello iam new to PC gaming well actually gaming in general and I wanted to play counter strike go but its really laggy and stutters on my pc which has AMD sticker on it? and my cousin has Intel inside core in his PC and he can run counter strike go without lag? please help thanks

Throwing all my eggs into a single basket with a single ssd, without benefit of any sort of backup plan, well that's like going back 20 years to having one large hdd run everything and praying nothing happened.
But will someone less skilled with computers even bother with backing data up to the second drive, or keeping track of where games are getting installed so their SSD doesn't get filled to capacity? And what happens if something like ransomware hits the system, potentially locking the backups? Any files that are not easily replaceable should ideally be backed up on another system or external drive.

Having both an SSD and a hard drive is fine for those needing a good amount of bulk storage, but I think we're getting to the point where such a setup is best suited for higher capacities.

I have to incline towards the "single bigger SSD" option, as SSDs are reliable enough today to hold all your stuff and you can just buy pendrives or external harddrives for personal stuff. Unless you're handling sensitive data and may need RAID0+1 or 1, then don't bother with the old "small SSD+ big HDD" split.

Hell, I'd even say get 2 SSDs for RAID 1 if you're worried.

Cheers!

Hey so my cousin told me I could have his old computer for 200 pounds. he said it is worth much more than that but hes given me a discount because im a relative. and he sent me the specs. is this any good?

AMD FX-9590
Sabertooth 990FX Motherboard
Corsair H100i liquid cooler
16GB Gskill Ripjaws ddr3 RAM 2400MHz
NZXT Phantom 410 Black Case
Radeon HD 7990 6GB GPU
EVGA 850w Bronze power supply
480GB SSD
3TB Western Digital Blue Hard Drive

He said he would throw in his old clicky sounding keyboard (I forgot the name) and mouse for an extra 30

Not to offend your cousin, but that system has been castrated. That motherboard doesn't officially support the FX-9xxx series processors. It can only handle processors with up to 140watt TDP. The FX-9590 has a 220 watt TDP. That's like telling a Ferrari it can never go over 60KPH.

It's an upgrade over your current system, but it will never reach it's intended potential and you're still several generations of processor and graphics behind today's standards. £200 sounds more like you're doing HIM a favor. Personally, I'd pass.

It's not a bad deal for what you get, but I'd swap the CPU, MoBo and RAM to a new group of stuff. Also, that HD 7990 is a power hungry monster, but you'll be able to game with it for sure.

Why I say this? Because that system, just looking at it, will consume as much as a Microwave. That 850W will be used to its full capacity, I'm sure. I will not advice you to get that system unless you accept you will have, without even going on a hyperbole, a huge heat generator next to you.

Ask if you can just get everything BUT the CPU, RAM and Motherboard for a bit less? Otherwise, the £200 is a good deal for everything else.

Cheers!

hi, so I asked him if I could take everything except the processor memory and motherboard and he said that since he really doesn't want to part it out and just wants to get rid of the thing he said I could have the lot for 100 pounds keyboard/mouse included.

He said that he used it for 4 years and never had a problem with it and he admitted he cheaped out on the motherboard but he said for the games I play the processor wont be using its max potential anyway. Although he did say that his energy bills went up by 45 pounds each year so he suggested that if I buy it, when im not using it I turn it off instead of leaving it on like I did my current pc. oh and he also cut the price in half to 100 pounds and including the mouse/keyboard because hes sick of seeing it and wants to get rid of it

LOL, damn... Yeah, then that's even better. You can just go to your local recycling center and just dump the CPU, Motherboard and RAM and purchase those 3 things separately and assemble them yourself or ask a friend (another friend, that is).

If you use Overclockers.co.uk you could buy the service I'm sure; at least give it a try if you have no one else to ask, but by all means try to change the CPU, RAM and Motherboard as soon as you can.

Cheers!

that pc is at the end of it's life. all our sabertooth pcs are dying. you can do better than this. totally not worth 200 pounds

by the way for anyone wondering my cousin listed the specs of his pc for me:

Core i7 9700k
ASUS ROG Maximus Hero z390 Motherboard
32GB 3000MHz DDR4
RTX 2080 TI
1TB SSD x4
Fractal Design Meshify Case
Corsair RM 750 Power Supply

eh, old hardware is, well, OLD, and old stuff that's nearing end of useful life isn't worth your time/money

but whatever, if you want it, go for it, and AMD doesn't suck, they are the only really good competition we have and they force Intel to update/compete

I've only used AMD now for the past few decades, at work, it's all we use. they are FANTASTIC, long lasting and HARD WORKING systems. our Sabertooth force has been in action for a VERY long time now, and they are all dying off, one by one.

So we keep the helpful information going in this, please concentrate on your next move, @QQ7007.

You will buy the £100 PC from him, so what will you do with yours? Is the case you have better? You can mix and match things if you're lucky enough, but that will require you to tinker a bit. Would you be comfortable with that?

Do you think your cousin can help you modify this PC he is selling to you and assemble a new one? @Wolfshadw put a good list of minimal components that you can just use for under £300, so you will still be under your budget for a full PC. I'd say that a great opportunity for you to seize.

Cheers!

I like AMD, because I like money. With Ryzen 3000 anyway, you get performance comparable to Intel, for a significant cost savings. For instance, an R5 3600, can hold its own, vs an 8700k, in most scenarios, but is a good $100+ less. The cooler I chose was able to handle my 6700k @4.5ghz, so I used it as an inexpensive option.

You can go even cheaper, on cooling, and motherboard if willing to try and mess with bios flasback capable, MSI B450 board.

A 3700x vs a 9700k is a similar situation, and the 3700x's cooler is adequate enough, that you don't even have to buy a cooler. The 9900k vs the 3900x, the pricing is closer, but the 9900k really needs a more expensive motherboard, and cooling to get the most out of it. In multi-threaded situations, the 3900x outperforms, the 9900k.

so if I buy this PC for 100 pounds I will have about 400 left for a new processor motherboard and ram.

What about the other questions? XD

Cheers! 😛
ah ok yes he doesn't mind what happens to his pc and has offered anyway to help put new parts in to upgrade his old pc that I will buy off him. he suggested:
Ryzen 5 1600
B450 Motherboard
8GB Ram (he says thats all I need for the games I will play)
500GB SSD
and of course all of the other existing components like power unit and the HD7990 and I will be re using my own case
and it comes to a total of (his PC included): 320 pounds
any thoughts? thanks
