Why does my 4790k not Turbo Boost to 4.4ghz? It only goes up to 4.2ghz
Just built a new machine. Using an MSI Z87M GAMING.
The bios has been updated to 1.4

Under stressing the CPU will only max out at 4.2ghz. The 4790k TUrbo's to 4.4ghz no?

4.4GHz is the max turbo for a single core. When multiple cores are stressed the max they'll do is 4.2GHz. Some motherboards bypass this and allow all cores to turbo to 4.4GHz, but that's technically outside of Intel's specifications.

yes, but a week ago, I had a 4.4 GHz. I did not change anything in the BIOS, this morning I have to reinstall the entire BIOS to the latest version and I still have only 4.2 Ghz

Did you happen to change any power plan settings in Windows?

Try setting that to High Performance, and/or set Processor Power Management (in advanced power settings) to 100% min and 100% max.

...Because the CPU will boost to 4.2GHz-4.4GHz depending on the load. It all depends on the workload of when you check the CPU speed. So let's say you play a game or run a software that uses 4+ threads. The CPU will boost to 4.2GHz. Let's say your game/program only uses 3 cores that means it would boost 3-cores to 4.3GHz. In your case there was probably a program running that utilizes only 1-Core hence why you saw 4.4GHz. In general unless you turn off power saving options the CPU core frequency will change automatically depending on the load and stay low when idle.

Your computer has no issues.

thank you all for your help. problem is solved - in BIOS, I turned on "Enhanced Turbo Boost" and now it works smoothly

You meaning like Rep+ and or Thanks in some other forums? I don't think Tomshardware has any of those features. Best you can do is select someone's post as an answer which only matters if someone is trying to get badges. I guess it can help people with the same problem find the potential answer faster than searching the whole thread.
