why is my GTX 780 running PCI express 2.0

Noticed in my Nvidia control panel also in AIDA64 Extreme Edition that that my PCI express bus is running @ 2.0.even though everything is PCI express 3.0
would greatly appreciate any info to the reason why.

This may happen due to native power saving profile of PCI express. If you happen to have a GPU-Z. Run that program, you'll find a icon next to PCI Bus Interface on the main page. Click that icon. It will open a small window in which click at run test button. One the test is started, check the PCI Express Bus Interface, It should report 3.0.

Most CPUs and chipsets do not support PCI-e 3.0. There is no difference in speed at the moment anyways, 1.0 is just as fast.

i don't have the numbers, but i think a 780 can push a 1.0,

I haven't heard of that, but I can see how it's possible. Most of the time people are more concerned about the fact that a CPU can only support a 1.0 slot, not about the slot itself. A slight reduction in performance would be expected then, I guess.

2.0 vs 3.0 has identical results, though, even on the newest cards.

yes, last time i checked, 2.0 can't be saturated by the new cards.

GPU-Z reports the bus interface is PIC-E 2.0x16 @x16 1.1 when video card is at idle

When I run a video card benchmark or the rendered test it changes to PIC-E 2.0x16 @x16 2.0

so now I'm more confused why my card is running at @ PCI-E X 16 2.0
and idling @ PCI-E X 16 1 .1

Thanks for your reply, you put me on the right track to figure this out. GPU-Z showed me in real time what was going on with the bus interface. I saw that it could not go above 2.0 because that was the Max it saw it could do. In other words it was showing me that the bus interface was 2.0. So there's no way you could run 3.0. Knowing only of the bios as a place to change the bus interface, I went looking there. Found an obscure heading called miscellaneous settings(really). Opening it I found it was set for PEG Gen 2,so I changed it to PEG Gen 3 save then rebooted. And now it's running at 3.0. if you had not got me looking at the bios again I would have never figured out
