[SOLVED] Will running a VPN while gaming take up precious system resources? (very low-spec laptop)

My laptop is an HP Pavilion with a 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, ATI Mobility Radeon 4650, and 8 GB of RAM. I was wanting to play some online games at my school, but they have an internet filter that blocks that. So obviously I would need a VPN. The issue is is that my laptop is already strained to the limit playing most games. So would running a VPN in the background cause any performance loss while gaming? I'm using ProtoVPN by the way.

Thanks.

Update: I decided to try it out at home and it seems to me that there isn't a noticeable difference, but the question still stands out of curiosity: Just how much system resources (if any) are used by a VPN?
