hello

i have encountered a dilemma as to whether when I switch from windows 7 to windows 10, does my windows 7 licence work for windows 10 because my PC is registered under a windows 10 system? In other words can i still use my product key on a new PC

Thanks.

You can Upgrade your current Win 7 to Win 10.
You cannot use that on a new PC.

Your Win7 license becomes Win10, activated online. Win7 product key will become invalid and won't activate a Win7 install after a month of usage Win10. So have a month to decide to stay Win10 or return to Win7.

If you remain Win10 and do a fresh install, the product key section which it asks for during the install you may skip. Microsoft remembers your motherboard which Win7 was upgraded from and will activate online.

A new PC will need its own OS license. Be that Win 7, 8.1, 10, Linux, whatever.

And what is this license? Which OS version?
OEM or Retail?

it's windows 7 pro and it's OEM. Now i know what is said about the OEM licences but i have seen people using OEM with new PC after retiring a previous PC. I was also told by a local computer store that this product key will work when transferring to a new computer. Is this true? Is that only true using hardrive mirroring software?

The only entity that can determine this is Microsoft.

So, to verify...
You have a PC
Originally, Win 7 (OEM).
Upgraded to Win 10.
You wish to use this same Win7/Win10 license on a whole new PC.

Is this correct?

What will you do with the old hardware, that now has no OS?

First of all does it really matter what i do with my old hardware?
Yes i wish to use the licence on a whole new PC.
but from what i've just read on a different forum OEM can only be used with the machine that is came with.

Yes, OEM is tied to its original motherboard.
