Hi all,

I got a P4 2.53B w/ 512MB of RAM running XP SP1. Winamp 5 takes literally a minute to start up?? This does not happen with any other application. Any ideas??

Try removing folders in Winamp/preferences/media library that Winamp scans when it starts up, or have Winamp not scan at all and add media to the library manually.

I think it's the media library that makes Winamp 5 startup so sluggish (I've noticed it on my system as well).

1.4 Ghz AMD T-Bird underclocked to 1 Ghz...just to be safe!

I think I might have to be less-sturbon and reinstall windows. I remember even winamp 2 took a while to load.

Just unchecked the option to load the library at startup, and it didn't make too much difference :'(

well there are a few options.

first question is what winamp ar eyou using 5.03 5.02, 5.01 5.0 or an older pre release?

one is "modern skins"
the other is the ML (depends how many songs you have i guess)

i have a P4 2.4Ghz with 1 Gb ram. so they are comparable computers. i use the Gen_timerestore plugin which fires up winamp 5.03 on startup and gets it playing as soon as windows is in. (it also plays from the last position 😀)

i havn't seen any issues with my computer.

another thing could be fonts, i had 2800 fonts installed once and it considerably slowed down everything LOL.

try looking at your Buffer sizes in winamp, your skin refresh rates, and such like that.

also what format music do you mainly listen to?

tell us how it goes after the windows install

Thanks for the suggestions....

I have upgraded to winamp 5.03 and turned the modern skin buffer down to the least performance requirement. Currently, it takes about 10-20 seconds to laod up, which really is acceptable.

I will be doing a linux - XP dual boot after exams, so hopefully thinkgs will be a little faster afterwards :)

By the way, how's your MD player holding up?? Mine started skipping randomly, so I sold it to my friend for 20 bucks :)

Cheers!!

no speed increase from linux sorry. infact the User interface of Linux is reported as being slower than windows or Mac. music and such i have seen no improvement in linux.

BTW how fast is your computer.

and my MD player i havn' used for a wee while, havn't really had the time, and i would want to borrow a friends NetMD that would make it cool to copy stuff.

but yeah its still going i think.
