When you re-install (not just update or repair), does XP just delete all
previous files, or does it actually re-format your hard drive as well?

You get the option to either repair (keeps old files) or do a full install.
If a full install then it will ask you to select the drive/partition etc and
ask if you want to do a quick or a full format. In which case you lose
everything on the drive.
Back up what you need to a CD
