Hello,

I have Windows 10 Education version as a result of going to an IST class in a votech school. I have refused to install the Anniversary Update for a long time now due to countless bugs, so until recently I have the "Defer Upgrades" option checked. However, I figure now would be a good time to install it. I unchecked the "Defer Upgrades" box but I cannot update. Every time I update it, it goes through, but then when my PC boots it gives me a blue screen with the "Inaccessible Boot Drive" error. It then restores the previous version of Windows. I have two questions:

1. How do I fix this?

2. If the update goes through and I still discover a plethora of bugs, can I revert back to my old installation?

Thanks!

Solution

Well you can download the ISO and keep it for as long as you'd like, and the Product key they give you is valid forever once you redeem it.

Oh well. I'll have...
2. If it fails or you do not like it....prepare for that.
Using any of the current imaging tools (Macrium Reflect, Acronis True Image)...create an image of the C drive as it currently exists.
If, during this process, it fails, or your dog kicks the power cable out, or whatever....you can recover that image and go back to exactly how it was when you created the image.

(and you should be doing this anyway)

Good idea, I'm doing it now.

Any advice for question number 1?

1. Download and create a DVD or USB of the current Win 10 Educational install.
Boot from that, and it should give you the option of an install with "Keep Everything"
This is mostly what happens with the updates, especially the major ones lie the Anniversary.

My school only allows you to download the ISO once, so I can't redownload the current version.

"Hello...IT Dept? My drive crashed, and I need to download the Win 10 Edu version from the school, to reinstall on my new drive. Can you help me?"

Thanks, I'll check with them tomorrow. If they can't help I'll report back.

I checked with my school today. They said that I was only allowed one download per the Agreement between them and Microsoft.

1 active license and use, I can totally understand.
Only able to download it once? What happens if/when your drive dies? Laptop falls off the desk?

Oh well...
Don't know what to tell you.

Oh well. I'll have to do some more research and figure if my problem is more narrow.

Oh, and here are my PC specs if they can help generate any more final advice: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Bk3JRG

Thanks for all the help!
