[citation][nom]sicundercover[/nom]Interesting how people have been openly testing Windows 7 for a year now, and here we are a few weeks from Windows 7 release and miraculously these details start to pop up. Im pretty sure not only would I have heard at least a mutter about this over the past year but that I would have noticed it myself. But this is only second time Ive heard this and both times were today.[/citation]

I second on that as I am a Vista person and will stick to Vista until the end. If I ever get a 3rd PC, it will be Win7 however. I will still keep my Vista and XP netbook. I posted a fourm on Toms Vista site and found that there are a few Vista faithfuls. Its basically the same but was released a bit too early for the newby XP users. So the marketing dept. at MS failed Vista more than anything coz Im sure simple patches could have fixd those prompts instead of how we do it now. There was an article that even stated that 7's loading time was longer than Vistas.... theres a thought...

[citation][nom]ubernoobie[/nom]How about if you defrag every month? I've been using vista 1 year so bear and i get no noticable increase, 1second> if harddrive defragged[/citation]
I'm guessing you mean a full defrag in addition to the automatic weekly defrag that Vista does by default?

Why wouldn't Windows 7 'rot' just like any other OS? The user that installs all kinds of crapware on the PC deserves more blame than the OS.

How can an OS take more time to start over the time...? Seriously, it's one of the main reason I format so often.

Not only does Windows take more time to start, but a lot of functions are corrupted because of all the big programs installed.

It's one of the main reason I mostly use freeware now. Nero, Norton, Microsoft Office and many others are now taking more than a gigabyte of disc space while slowing your system due to the amounts of drivers.

The same for all these "Opening on startup programs" and these "would you want that this program allocate these type of files". I got my lesson now.

I use Open Office, Gimp, Combined Communauty Codec Pack, AVG, Ashampoo Burning Studio, Izarc, File SHredder and CCleaner... these programs are all free and they prevent Windows for getting big and clumsy with their counterpart you can buy on the market.

I HAVE ONE SOLUTION FOR YOU GUYS!!!!
You can thumb me down on it, or try it to see if it actually works:

ULTIMATEDEFRAG 2008, and defrag the HD with Windows, Program files, documents and settings, and/or User folders to the outside of the disk; defragged by NAME.
A name defrag takes long, but it is worth the speed gain!

My windows XP went from 1,5minutes to 52 seconds in boot time!

"Windows 7 Rots Just Like All Other Windows"

"Windows 7 slows down over time (ages) just like Vista, with boot times increasing more 330 percent over the course of two years of regular use, iolo technologies shared with Tom's Hardware."

"Thankfully, it seems that Windows 7 might age more gracefully than Windows Vista, as the newer OS seems to be able to keep its legs in better condition even after months of usage."

"In a comparison of three- and six-month systems, iolo technologies found that Windows 7 outperformed Windows Vista in the area of boot times."

So.....Which is it? If you're going to write an article and attach such a sensational headline as this, perhaps, you might want to have the articles content back up the headline!

Show me an operating system that wouldn't bog down to a degree when it's subjected to the types of usage a typical Windows install experiences. Talk to any computer guy/gal and he'll/she'll tell you about the avg. computer users system cluttered with malware and junk to the point it takes 20 seconds to open a window. I run 3 instances of XP home, one of XP Pro, and one of Windows 7. Other than Windows 7 all have had multiple installs and uninstalls of numerous pieces of software. Some have experienced various malware/spyware attacks, but all of them boot damned near as fast today in spite of the amount of installed software as they did when the OS was first installed. Why? Because I maintain them as well as the tools at my disposal will allow. O&O Defrag, scheduled virus and malware scans, registry scans and defragmentation etc etc.

Way to make a grab for the big brass ring.

I'll be sure to skip your future articles. Just cannot stand girls who dance on the tables in bars or the SERIOUS journalist with an agenda who didn't get enough attention from their mom as a youngster.

This is the second "News" article I've seen today on Tom's about this same topic. Both of them coming from "iolo" as some claimed 3rd party testing.

I don't care for articles like this, as they feel more like an advertisement for PC Mechanic than anything else.

Amen.

I find this article as an insult to Microsofts latest masterpeice... don't blame the use of a dumbass on the OS.

"Windows Rot" as they put it is only for basic users who don't keep their PC clean.

Most of the time it occurs over time when people levae their caches filled with temporary files and install a bunch of programs that boot up with the PC.

That or openly allow spyware/adware on their PCs.

My Vista installs never got like that but every year I do a reinstall just to clear out some older programs I might not be using that I don't feel like trying to remove manually. Plus it frees up disk space.

"I use Diskeeper Pro and that seems to keep everything in order. I always wind up wipin' the damn drive anyway."

LOL....I always though of this as being a pretty severe way to deal with slowdowns. But I have to admit over the years there's been a couple of viruses that got the best of me 🙂

Windows XP users on Windows 7 - It's too slow and it won't work! *Cough... you might want to upgrade your hardware. Read something called Hardware Specifications. 2GB memory... dude?

Anarchists, I mean Linux users on Windows 7 - Why am I even posting comments online? Well, there's nothing else to do... wait, I can download an app someone else made for free, again.

Rich people, I mean Apple users on Windows 7 - Who's the "Administrator"?

If Iolo buys favorable faux news articles on here, can we safely assume that Intel and Nvidia do the same? I've seen articles cheering Intel that were just as thinly veiled, the only reason this fails is because Iolo isn't cool enough to have it's own fanboys...

I agree with omnimodis78 whole heartedly, and jhonnylucky..... you are lucky if you've never face the slowing down problems.....
But guys lets talk about this lame bit of news..... windows sucks as always..... be it vista , or xp or any of it's new fangled ideas........ but yet it is the most widely used os in the world......lol..... so as we would put it...... 7 is way ahead of 98...... and thats good progress.... esp since we have nearly got rid of BSOD....... and as far as the ROT goes..... you very rightly said keeping a computer is like keeping a house.......lol so the more you clutter your house..... the dirtier it gets.... right.??? I don't think I've seen a house which the neighbours come and clutter ever..... so to the newsman...... pls.... let's get on with the real issues and not a stupid opinion of a stupid company trying to get written adverts for itself tagging on the big fish.....

Ahaha. Made my day. :')

Keeping up with Windows can be a task, especially for those lacking time or interest in the matter. Maybe with the next releases of Windows in the years to come, Windows will keep itself organized.

Yes, it's called the registry and one of the main reasons Windows turns into a big turd over time. The more you install and uninstall stuff the faster the registry starts bogging down your machine. OS X and Linux do not use or have the need for a registry system to tie the OS together, another reason they are more secure too. Then you have the f*cked up file system in Windows that requires them to give you a program/tool to upkeep it called Defrag. There is no defrag tool needed for OS X or Linux either. Yes Windows is real Fancy now but it is still a Swiss Cheese OS.
