Hi all,

Thank you in advance for any help.
So I'm upgrading my rig and it's on Windows 7 Home. I just tried to upgrade to Windows 10 and after a long black screen after 2 hours it just seemed to come back to my usual desktop, no upgrade.

My question is: how can I upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7, if my new motherboard is not compatible with Windows 7?
Because I wonder if it's a hardware issue, maybe my current mobo isn't compatible with Windows 10?

Current hardware:
Mobo: Gigabyte Intel DQ67SW
Processor: Intel i-5 2400 3.1ghz
SSD 1: OS
SSD 2: Games etc
RAM: 16gb DDR3
GPU: AMD RX 580 4GB Nitro+
PSU: Antec NeoEco 650w Bronze

I am upgrading to:
Mobo: Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO AMD Socket AM4 (with BIOS updated to latest version for compatibility with the Ryzen 5 3600 processor)
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6GHz 6 Core (Socket AM4) CPU
RAM: 16GB DDR4

Thanks again.

Solution
To make this work, you'd need to Upgrade your existing system to Win 10, then link that OS license to your MS account.
Then the license could be transferred to the new hardware.
Not the install, just the license.

Do you have the actual Win 7 license key?
You might be able to use that to activate a clean install on your new hardware.
Maybe.

If it doesn't work:
Sell some or all of the old hardware and use that to fund a new OS license for your new PC.

Hi, thanks,
As you said, was what I intended.
I retrieved the key using Belcarc. Not sure I could use that to activate a clean W10 install but will check.
My old hardware should cover half the cost of a W10 key so not the end of the world.
I will try to install overnight tonight again and maybe it goes through this time.

From any working Win 7 or later system, create a Win 10 USB to install with.
Your existing Win 7, for instance.

Hi, thanks for your reply - I've tried that on 2 separate USB sticks and it is saying it fails but doesn't know why (at least it's honest!)
This leads me to believe I might struggle with the upgrade, so I'm going to buy a Win10 install CD for £30 off ebay (100% positive reviews) as a backup.

Install it and leave it Unactivated, until such time as you can afford a real license.

It will run just fine.
You'll have a randomly appearing watermark at bottom right, and no customization of the Taskbar or desktop.
That's it. It runs just fine otherwise.

Or...see if your current Windows 7 license key will activate that new Win 10 install on the new hardware.
