There are holes and security vulnerabilities in Windows. They admit that when they release the KB updates.

But the majority of issues with hardware is normally due to the hardware itself or the driver. The majority of BSoD are caused by a bad driver or badly coded software. Very few are because of the OS itself. In fact the BSoD was created to help diag what caused Windows to crash.

There are a few rare instances where a change in the OS can affect older hardware but again it is up to the hardware vendor to write drivers that properly support the new OS.

My fix was manually connecting to my Wifi changing my encryption protocol from AES to TKIP.. AES gave me access to my network but the internet would not work . Changed it to TKIP and internet came right up. My netgear router is configured for both. Installing 8.1 reset the manual settings so had to force it to take TKIP.

I have been trying to fix this issue in an HP ENVY TOUCHSMART QUAD EDITION 17t-j100 notebook with an Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 3160. This is a valid problem just as described in the first post. I have spent 2 weeks trying EVERYTHING mentioned here and still have the problem. Returning the PC... at the end of my rope!!!

Forgot to mention the fact that the PC was recently shipped to me with Windows 8.1 pre-installed... At this point I don't know who to blame...
