[citation][nom]bojenk[/nom]To everyone complaining about having JUST purchased windows 7 Lisences - Get yourself a Technet subscription. You get 10 keys for EACH version of Windows and EACH edition (Ultimate, Professional, Home Premium ect) and all of their office and server products. All for the low low price of US$250 /year. When you think about it, that's a FANTASTIC price.[/citation]
Why the heck would I want to pay $250/year for 30+ Windows licences and another 10 Office licences? Sure if I had 30 computers it might be good value, but I'm not running a business.

On the GUI side... customizable themes (size and shape of windows, standard button placements, write your own windows shaders for appearance and transparency, minimize and maximize animations, taskbar look and feel... etc)
I also hope they don't start using .NET for development of Windows components...

Windows 8 is being released so that MSFT have an excuse to stop supporting XP and Vista. Faster release cycles will mean shorter support cycles, equaling more revenue. Can't blame them, they are a business. If you want to escape this treadmill start dualbooting with Linux. Increased use of Linux which by the way is a safer OS for internet use, would put pressure on software companies to release Native Linux software. This would lead to the OS being relegated to what it should be, a free framework which allows programs to run, and not a 40gb monster that costs $130.00 to upgrade every 18 mths.

[citation][nom]ordcestus[/nom]I just want the amount of customization i get from my linux like changing the login screen and the option to have more effects like i get in compiz.[/citation]
There are shedloads of things you can customise in Windows like this, you can customise the login screen, the splash screen, etc...
Tools to do it are free too, some freeware utilities from Stardock can do it amongst others.

So it takes MS three years to replace the unloved Vista, but only two years to replace a successful Windows 7 launch. Seems backwards to me. Just make it SP2 and call in Windows 7+.

Microsoft should remove this stupid registry in next version of Windows.I think they must do it how is Mac OS working, or at similar principle.

[citation][nom]bboysil[/nom]I also hope they don't start using .NET for development of Windows components...[/citation]
They already use .NET for some snap-ins in the Microsoft Management Console.

But changing the look of Windows and doing a few registry hacks is about all you can do. Linux is completely customisable, with the only limitations being how much you want to do, how good your technical skills are and how much you want to learn to improve those skills.

Too soon: only two years after 7.

They better bring some big improvements like a filesystem that doesn't have to be defragged and not have it use more resources than 7. 64bit should be standard and please make it modular so people who really want bloated crapware (like natal or touchscreen support) can download that AFTER installation, while the rest of us can keep our systems clean and fast.

[citation][nom]jfem[/nom]Make it compatible to old programs.[/citation]

Deffo +1 for that one. My bargain early adopter price for Win7 wasn't such a bargain when a couple of applications weren't happy and I had to contemplate forking out for other updates.

What would be nice would be to have an option for using some kind of wrapper so that hardware that has XP drivers will work. I hit upon one or two straight away, kind of sucks when you realise that your perfectly functional Epson scanner is made useless. It is probably quite amusing to imagine that Linux probably supports heaps more hardware now.

Some decent built in options for desktop tweaking would be nice compiz style, don't have to overboard.

Ughh...the registry, who really wants that to hang around.

Some cheap upgrade pricing would be nice. Face it Win7 was just Vista fixed, hardly a huge update and a new OS. Win2K to XP was much the same.

Use your weight Microsoft to insist that PC manufacturers supply proper install media.

Alas forced back to XP for me as most of my hardware and software isn't new enough for Vista let alone 7 onwards! Mind you, friend sold me his old MacBook Pro so much happier using that 99% of the time.

No one is forcing you to buy Windows 8, people won't make fun of you if you still use 7. I personally will make a judgement call at the time if the features it offers are worth the cost to buy.
Yes - Buy it and use it
No - Don't buy it, continue happily with 7
Why is this so difficult to understand?

When you consider that Windows 2000 was developed to be business/enterprise only, Microsoft's consumer OS track record is starting to remind me of the "Star Trek Curse"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_(film_series)#Films

If you start with Windows 98 (I haven't worked with anything previous and will reserve judgment of them) then you start to see:
98: Hit
ME: Miss
XP: Hit
Vista: Miss
7: Hit

... I'll be holding onto Windows 7 for a while.

You can't just decide to miss out version of Windows willy-nilly

95 - Win
98 - Win
ME - Fail
2000 - Win
XP - Win
Vista - Fail
7 - Win

That pattern shows 8 to be a "Win", but then again, who's really counting?

This whole Windows naming thing is funny, and ridiculous. Maybe they should just take a page from Canonical's naming convention with Ubuntu. Consistency reflects professionalism, and Microsoft sorely lacks that at times.

[citation][nom]witcherx[/nom]Why is it so difficult for all of you to guess?Windows 7 + Natal = Windows 8 (.)[/citation]

I think you are on to something...
Maby some 3d incorporation..

One could dream, but I wouldn't expect MS to do that.

[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]You can't just decide to miss out version of Windows willy-nilly[/citation]

Not willy-nilly at all. Microsoft used to develop separate OS's for Home Users and Businesses, and Windows 2000 was professional only, (The last of its kind) so it would have been one-of-these-things-is-not-like-the-others, unless I included Windows NT 3.1-4, which I never used.

I never used Windows 95 either, and I try not to arbitrarily judge hardware\software that I have never used first hand.

I was originally going to limit the list to OS's from this century, but that would have left Microsoft with a whopping 50% fail-rate - and I still think that Windows 98 was an amazing little piece of software.

So if you must, you may feel free to accuse me of including versions of Windows willy-nilly. 😀

personally I would like a fully 3D interface, like in the movies.
and that somehow the system could translate application code to be multithreaded.
only a vision.

I don't quite understand why so many people want it to be 3d... In my opinion, it's just a gimmick.

Just bring back a more customizable start menu and i'll be happy. I reverted back to Vista after Win7 proved to have ZERO customization ability. I can't even group or add folders of programs to the start menu, it's limited in length, slow and just a hassle for power users with tons of programs.
