Just a few thoughts:

1. Make Windows 8 64 bit only. No 32/64 bit versions out there.
2. Make only 2 versions of the OS. Desktop and server.
3. Ditch NTFS and build a new more robust file system
4. Integrate an emulator/virtualization of the 32 bit windows kernel, be it XP or something else. Also allow the launching of 32 bit legacy apps in a similar way that Wine on linux works or Parallels on the Mac. That should keep business users happy
5. Sandbox all processes
6. Speed up boot up times

Hah it's so funny how MS says this stuff for every single version of Windows and then a few months before it's actually really they suddenly apparently have decided to remove all the revolutionary stuff and the whole thing basically turns out to either be (a) really just be a service pack + new desktop themes or (b) be god awful and in need of an (a).

[citation][nom]berserker29[/nom]Not willy-nilly at all. Microsoft used to develop separate OS's for Home Users and Businesses, and Windows 2000 was professional only.[/citation]
Windows 2000 was sold over the counter to anyone who wanted it at several computer dealerships where I live, I bought a copy myself and was using it as my primary OS for nearly 2 years. Wether the intention is for business users or not, it wasn't business only for availability, which exlains XP Pro being used for home users too. I suppose if we are going to be REALLY anal about it then we could add Windows 3.11, 98v2, NT, XP Media Centre and XP Tablet to the list.

Fair to say though that Windows 8 will still sell like the proverbial hot cake.

[citation][nom]berserker29[/nom]When you consider that Windows 2000 was developed to be business/enterprise only, Microsoft's consumer OS track record is starting to remind me of the "Star Trek Curse" If you start with Windows 98 (I haven't worked with anything previous and will reserve judgment of them) then you start to see:98: HitME: MissXP: HitVista: Miss7: Hit... I'll be holding onto Windows 7 for a while.[/citation]
Don't forget 95: miss
3.11 hit

"While we've already caught glimpses of work on top of Windows 7 in a recent 7700 build, we don't much about what will be different."

Proof reading, anyone? And in the first paragraph too! :) I do like the opening line though.... wait for it...

I could have said everything this guy said who "supposedly" works for Microsoft. In other words besides boosting Microsoft/Windows ego more there was nothing detailed about Windows 8 besides its high fived in the development rooms as "Windows.Next"

Guys, they're talking about the vision for the next version. Since when is it possible for MSFT (or any SW team, for that matter) to go from defining a vision to developing and releasing a Beta product in one year? Not something the size and complexity of Windows; no way.

So either we get an incremental release in 2011 (like Win XP was from Win 2000: mostly minor interface changes with some use-targeted core changes for home users), or it takes a longer time to release - like Win 7 took after XP. IMO, Vista was a way for MSFT to get cash to finish 7, because the budget for 7 was running out and the project was late. They packaged up what worked, sold it, and used the incremental revenue to cover their project overrun.

There is only one thing I HATE from Windows 7, it's the Shutdown button in the start menu. It's fine for when you want to shut down the computer, but when I simply want to log off or switch users, that little arrow next to it is too small. I often click Shutdown instead of that little arrow and then I have to reboot the computer.

Is there a way to change that shutdown button and make it a logoff button instead?

But Windows 95 was a huge hit as well...

uhm.. isn't ALL Windows versions so far already "something completely different from what folks usually expect of Windows…"?

We expect new innovative ideas in new versions but get pretty much same things in new packaging and pricing. So hence is all win-versions being something completely different from what we'd expect to get from a new version.

"something completely different from what folks usually expect of Windows…"
It works?
Secure by default?
Not resource intensive?
DRM that is not annoying?
New features that drive competitors out of business?
Those are things I normally expect out of Redmond.

Too soon. Unless this is a free incremental update, MS is getting (more) greedy.
XP enjoyed 10 years of solid use, and it's still the most commonly used OS around the world. 7 has just arrived, and they want us to buy a new Windows in 2011? Forget it.

How about an OS that's bloat free, sleek and fast, compatible, and totally customizable?

Oh wait, right, this is WINDOWS.... I expect I'll need at least a 2tb HDD for the pagefile alone 😛

1) will it be secured : i doubt it
2) Will it have DRM or programs that will block any movies / mp3 that have not been bought: probably a bunch
3) will it be expensive : yes unless you buy the home edition that will have 50% option cut off
4)what computer configuration will you need : 250 gb ram, 50 tb HD, 64 cores ant will still feel like having a 486 computer....
5) will it install programs fast and when it's done the blue circle will stick there for about 5 min: count on it

Im prolly forgetting other stuff 😛

I was thinking about buying Win7, but if Win.Next will be out in 2011, and be so much better, maybe I can skip it (like I did with Win95, WinME, Win2000, and Vista). There may some good DX11 games out then, too.

A regional Microsoft VP stating that Windows 8 will be mind-blowing. uh, really? Well, Gee, I really expected him to come out and say that Windows 8 will make the Vista experience seem like a romantic vacation getaway.

[citation][nom]elel[/nom]Introduce multiple workspaces already! Windows is the only major holdout without this, and after 4 months of linux on my netbook I don't know what I did without it.[/citation]

Just get BB4WIN and problem solved

Sigh, I don't really give a $hit. I'm still using XP and happy with it. Since this Windows 8 will come out practically next year, I don't even feel like upgrading to Windows 7.

Holy crap, a new one already? Windows 7 JUST came out. I can't comprehend that windows 8 will be all that different from what we already have. A company just needing to make money i guess
