Ever heard of preemptive actions?

I won't like it one bit if they want me to keep all my personal things on their servers. If this is the way they are going, then I see Linux only for my PC. The only thing holding me back are games, but I will gladly dust off my console for those. (Oh and of course I will keep using Win 7 for as long as possible.)

don't worry guys, if comcast and other internet providers have there way the cloud concept will be dead very soon. you will max out your months data plan just login on your computer

don't worry, hackers will find a way to disable the kernel syncs when you connect to the net. It will end up similiar to other windows versions.

Microsoft is really going to shoot itself in the foot with this one if they try to make it mandatory to have an internet connection.
This will be another proof that fighting piracy by any means necessary helps no one.

No thanks, I am much rather stick with Vista on my game rigs. XP on the vintage and osx on the ibook. I do not like Win7 and Win 8 doesn't look like that it will be well received. No one is going to like such a feature nor isn't going to be happy with it period.

This is probably the best strategy to fight piracy, make the product so bad that no one will ever bother to pirate it (let alone buy it).

Theres no way this will work. No one will feel comfortable using an OS thats so dependent on an internet connection, so people wont want to switch to it. Especially since Win7 is a solid OS. Its common knowledge that the OS version that comes out after a well-received version won't do so well because people are still content with what they have. Add that to most peoples reaction to the whole cloud thing and it will fail worse than ME or Vista by a significant amount.

Besides, if M$ went forward with this idea as a way to "fight piracy", there would already be half a dozen different work-arounds discovered before it even goes RTM.

M$'s main money is in corporate/site licenses and OEM deals, the amount of money they *may* recover with increased anti-piracy measures wouldnt compensate for the amount they put into developing it, such is the case with many anitpiracy measures developed thusfar.

Cloud is overrated as a replacement for personal computing. It would be an excellent parallel/integration into personal computing, though. Roaming profiles would be nice but should by no means be mandatory. I'd have serious issues with privacy protection, etc.

If this is true, Windows 8 will be abbreviated to W8-which is exactly what I would do.

The Windows 8 cloud service will be hosted by Cyberdyne Systems. Then one day it will get infected with the Skynet virus, which spreads to all windows 8 computers in the world...

If it comes to a point where I must be connected to the internet to even use my computer with Windows 8, I must say I will not be using them. I have bought 1 pc game in the last year and it will most likely be my last PC game due to the fact that I had to connect to steam in order to even play it. Where I live there is no such thing as broadband internet and likely never will be because my towns population is less than 1000 with the nearest city only have a pop of 4k and AT&T wont upgrade their phone lines to carry DSL out this far.

I don't want anything "on the clowd" I store EVERYTHING on my computer. It's easy to back-up, and I have access to my files even if my ISP decides to go play golf and neglect customers. I never bought an on-line DRM game, and I will not buy Windows 8 unless it runs completly off my HDD.

P.S.

I tryed W7 beta, than used a pirated version for 3. Only after 6 months of use did i feel comfortable to fully migrate to W7 and bought 2 copies of the OS.

I bought win vista and regereted it terribly. Will not make the same mistake again.

Key kernel files on the cloud to prevent piracy?Even if just a rumor it's conceptually and intellectually (arguable here), probably commendable challenges at so-called trying to spearhead innovative initiatives.Realistically however MS have lost the plot.Forget the average Joe six pack. It'll be monumental to push the concept to biz due to obvious security and privacy concerns. This is too much centralized OS dependence that most IT admins won't even wish on their worst enemies.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.MS only have to look at their current OS' biz model flaws to at least effectively reduce much lost sales through piracy:-
1. Multiple SKUs - Wastes developmental resources across unnecessary redundancies, increases longtime Win users' animosity and just an excuse for shoddily done OS optimizations (if any if not reserved to service packs). Not to mention however the amount of rebates you throw at OEMs per license,it's an annoyance that can be done without.Especially when OEMs proceed to piss more people off with separate system DVD charges.

2. Related to the above the current state of lacking OS medium options to price ratios are just unacceptable.People are paying a premium for a license system that deprives them off the default right for a physical media that's essential for said OS' usage duration's maintenance and troubleshooting. For the prices per SKU it's already more than enough to provide installer or live USB flash sticks along with the usual retail/OEM packs. It's year 2010 and people are bored of burning extra coaster DVDs and CDs.Of course this can only apply to retail not bulk biz installs.

If it's all about the bottomline I'm sure that MS are more than capable to NOT reinvent the wheel to secure more legit sales.Figure out better ways to design an OS that people will legitly buy with a smile on their face instead of cooking up more ideas that can scare off even the most luddite of them all.

cloud computing is not reliable, as instead of just worrying about your OS and hardware messing up while working, you now have to worry about your PC hardware, OS, internet connection and micosoft's servers having any problems causing problems for you

On top of that, you will be reliant on an internet connection to do things that didn't require it in the past.

Other than it being less reliable, you have additional vectors of exploitation as well as a internet bottleneck.

All forums of online DRM even if they can function offline will eventually require you to log online.

For example, steam allows you to play in offline m,ode, but not forever, as steam has a little flaw, what is stopping you from buying a game, installing it then having all of your friends log into your account and install the game, then everyone plays in offline mode and enjoys the game at the same time.

If the os can work offline, it will eventually want an internet connection to make sure that you didn't turn into a thief while offline.

If MS fully destroyed the Pirating of Windows... then the user share of Windows will fall drastically and then suddenly no one will be running windows, lol.

MS will never make a desktop version of Windows that requires an internet connection to run. That would be pure suicide on their part, as a large number of businesses utilize heavily, computers that are either not on a network, or are on a network that is NATed and completely firewalled off from the outside world. In a U.S. market that is migrating ever so slowly towards Macs and the much more affordable Linux operating systems, pushing their flagship OS into the cloud is pure nonsense. I don't even know where this article is coming from, Windows 8 is just a pre-alpha build internal to MS right now and doesn't even look like a hint of what the finished product will eventually be. Try reporting on some real hardware, and not that you think maybe based on a few very wild guesses that an OS that hasn't even reached an alpha stage is going to be based on some internet-required technology that is available today because you want to meet your weekly post and word requirements.
