Watch out for the stampede of excited customers storming the Microsoft stores to grab a copy before the price goes up.

With as few people upgrading as there are now, Raising the price will just mean even less people "upgrade" (if you can call it that). I have no plans to ever upgrade unless I get a touchscreen laptop or something like that.

[citation][nom]azxcvbnm321[/nom]I have Windows 8 thanks to a new computer and I feel that it's just not that much of an improvement. I'm very very disappointed because Windows 8 has some nice features, but doesn't go far enough to let the user customize the experience like I feel they could have. For example, if you hover your mouse over an application on the bottom task bar, the window expands, and if you have multiple tabs going, they all expand and you can switch between them like you are using a magnifying glass. But Windows 8 automatically groups together tabs, unlike Windows 7 where tabs would be available individually at the bottom and you could switch between them easily by clicking on it. Now you have to hover over the damned group of tabs and then wait for them to expand in order to switch. This is very very annoying, I wish Microsoft gave you the option of HOW TO ARRANGE tabs, whether to group or not, but of course they don't. As for the new Metro/start screen, there's very little difference in functionality for me. It might be a little faster than pressing start, and then finding your folders, but swiping the bottom left corner is exactly the same thing as pushing start. And I still have to find my app, but I can do it a few seconds faster now because I know exactly where the app is on the screen. Yes this is better, but very very marginally better. And that sums up Windows 8, if you can stand the changes, then Windows 8 is a tiny bit better. But the improvements are way too small to make learning a whole new operating system worthwhile, and I think that's why so many people are frustrated like me. Why do I have to spend time to learn an OS that isn't much better than the one I'm used to? Why do I have to waste my time, my valuable time on Microsoft's whim? It's not worth it. That's the bottom line. Even if there was no cost to upgrade it would not be worth your time to learn Windows 8 given the lack of improvements. I think that sums up the feeling of most Windows 8 users.[/citation]

Umm.. not sure what you mean by tabs, but if your taskbar application instances group together, and you don't like it, you can change it from the taskbar properties.

Metro is worth the money alone! God bless Windows 8 and God bless Metro!

My pastor spent his sermon extolling the virtues of Metro. Anyone who does not like it, is hellbound. God bless you Microsoft and God bless you Julie Larson-Green!

The sooner the desktop is removed forever and Metro takes over the better! Anyone who disagrees probably eats Linux.

[citation][nom]apache_lives[/nom]Ah the mindless hatersDoesnt matter about your opinions, people still buy 8 and love it.This forum is filled with mindless haters that are clueless, all 20 of them[/citation]

Look at the Windows 8 adoption rate and Windows store app downloads.

[citation][nom]rantoc[/nom]Its more about giving a choice where to boot, many still like the desktop you know... why not let them choose what they like, not everyone like a strawberry shake... some like vanilla better! Bollocks as you say is removing that choice - A choice that was available in the beta!If you don't like the concept of choice its your choice, don't complain when others want to choose differently - Its a rather narrow minded thing to do![/citation]

People still liked DOS a lot too, but Windows 95 came along and changed the whole command prompt/GUI relationship. It became the standard UI template for Windows for nearly 20 years after that. The sooner you guys get over the fact that the "Start menu" is gone (Let's not bother getting into how it's not actually gone at all, but because it looks different you all find it so very scary.) and get used to the new interface, the sooner you can stop frothing at the mouth.

And regardless, saying your hate is related to lack of choice is... Pretty stupid, to be honest. If Microsoft wanted to remove choice Windows would be locked down much like Android and iOS are. If Microsoft really wanted to, they could totally remove your ability to install third party start menu software. In fact, they could do any number of things to remove the choices that you have when it comes to using Windows, but they don't. The whole PC concept revolves around choices and there is nothing about Windows 8 that strays from that path.

When can the people who frequent this website just be honest with themselves? You haven't used it, you never planned on using it, but because the bandwagon to hater town is boarding none of you want to feel left out. The funniest part of the whole thing is that you all think Windows hate has been limited to ME, Vista and now W8, but this happens every single time a new version of Windows comes out. People have ALWAYS hated Windows because it's always been "cool" to hate Windows. It's sad, really, but you guys make me chuckle, so thanks for that. 😀

Windows 8 adoption rate is low because Windows 7 is excellent, so many people don't feel the need to upgrade. The need for PC upgrades is also lower then it has been in the past. In the days of XP, computers needed to be replaced every 3-4 years. These days a new PC will last double that for most people, so the bulk of consumer adoption for Windows 8 will likely happen much later in it's lifecycle.

I know actually thinking logically about these things take some of the shininess out of being a hater, but try it every now and again!

Trash all the Metro Apps, set up your desktop shortcuts on the start screen and stop bitching. Windows 8 is an upgrade to 7 in every aspect that I use it (Storage Spaces is freaking capital G Genius).

Now with an expanded start screen it's more functional for me than the start button ever was.

The compatibility of some games is the only issue I have with it (Borderlands 1 comes to mind)

Other than the start screen being swapped for the start menu, it behaves like 7, only better.

[citation][nom]asnorton44[/nom]If you use Start8, Windows 8 isnt that bad. I have it set to boot straight to the desktop too.[/citation]
If you need an add-on for basic usage, that's the problem right there.

I've got mine. I don't plan on using it until Service Pack 1 comes out, however long that takes. But at least when it does I won't have to pay 150$ to use it.

You don't need an addon for basic usage of Windows 8. You need an addon if you wish to revert back to the legacy UI. That's a choice, not a requirement. I fail to see the problem.

I almost forgot to comment on the actual story. Always getting distracted by the haters.

Anyway, I'm not sure why this is news. Right from the very beginning Microsoft said this early adoption program was going to end on January 31st. The price isn't increasing, it's simply reverting back to MSRP now that the sale is over...

Good thing Tom's doesn't cover retail business news. "Toaster Ovens to get more expensive after Black Friday sales end"

Looks like I didn't upgrade then. I was going to, it's not like I love vista and the price was right.

But they don't actually seem to sell a kind of upgrade I could use. I was going to add a bigger HD at the same time, but it seems I'd need to first install vista and then win8, and the next reinstall would be the same.

Too much hassle, no thanks.

Windows 8 aint that bad. I want my start button back though and im not paying no $5 for it. Their having a laugh. MS should give an optional update to give us this back.

I installed it on my laptop, and just don't like it. It's not horrible, or any of the other exaggerated claims. But it's annoying, and Windows 7 isn't. That's enough reason right there to not upgrade any of my other computers.

Microsoft forgot Marketing 101. Give the customer what they want. They blatantly ignored the media and users that said the Metro interface would be a disaster on a desktop, and instead tried to foist it on users, and strip away several features found in Windows 7.

Google and Apple know that tablet and workstation operating system should function differently, but Microsoft decided to make a Frankenstein OS instead, and now the villagers are chasing it out of town.

Workstation and desktop sales are dying. Instead of charging more money for the OS, they should be giving it away. The OS is the gateway to all other software sales. Microsoft should be doing everything it can to ensure that Windows is the gateway used by users for cloud and software, and that means making it free.
