windows detected a hard disk problem

Hi all! My hard drive might be a goner, but I'm hoping to get input/opinions, since most of the tests I ran said I was fine.

Okay so last night I got a popup saying "windows detected a hard disk problem" and gave me an option to start backing up. While the red X of the popup didn't look right to me, I did just switch to Windows 10 and I know things look slightly different, so I went ahead and copied my documents/photos/music on my back up drive, and started googling for answers.

My first thought was virus, and I did find articles saying a virus can trick the computer into thinking there is a problem, yet nothing but a few trackers were found when I scanned with SuperAntiSpyware.

I took a look at Security and Maintenance, it said all drives are working properly, but I looked at the reliability history and there was a critical event saying:

"Windows Disk Diagnostic detected a S.M.A.R.T. fault on disk HGST HTS545050A7E380 (volumes C:\). This disk might fail; back up your computer now. All data on the hard disk, including files, documents, pictures, programs, and settings might be lost if your hard disk fails. To determine if the hard disk needs to be repaired or replaced, contact the manufacturer of your computer. If you can't back up (for example, you have no CDs or other backup media), you should shut down your computer and restart when you have backup media available. In the meantime, do not save any critical files to this disk."

I looked back and while it showed I had critical events before (all oddly starting in December but w/e), this was my first disk failure warning.

So I went a head and followed directions other people have gotten.

I went to my computer -> drive c -> properties -> tools -> error checking, and nothing was found.

I couldn't find a diagnostic program from Toshiba (my laptop brand) but I read that I could use Seagate's.
Did the Short DST, it passed.
Did the S.M.A.R.T. test, it passed.
Did the Long Generic, it stopped responding at one point but I didn't touch it, and it started going again, only to hit 45% and tell me it failed.

All the solved posts I read had failed all the tests, and I only failed that one, so while I am eyeing new drives on Amazon (my one year warranty passed in October) , I'm hoping to get some input from others and maybe other people who have passed most of the tests can benefit as well.

I read another post that recommend Speccy to take a look at a hard drive, so I went ahead and did that, and I don't understand most of it other than it's telling me the status is good and that I need to turn off my computer more often omg.

Hmm even though the SMART test all came back good there could be hard drive failure. Do this.

Download the Crystal Disk Info in my signature. It will show the same status more than likely but just to be safe. Just look at the top of the program and if it says good just close it if it says caution then see what has the Yellow or Red dot next to it and what the numbers on the right right are.

Also Download Crystal Disk Mark and run it then hit the Run All Test button. Once it is done post back what the speeds of each one are. Somtimes even though the SMART is fine the read and write speeds of the hard drives can show signs of failing. Since it is a SATA II drive it sounds like it could just be an old drive.

Ok so Sequential Read and Writes aren't too bad. For an older drive like that that is probably right where it should be. More modern drivers get around 90-110 on those numbesr. The Random 4k stuff don't worry about. Hard drives don't get much more than what your drive got. People who need that kind of speed get SSD's.

So you got 8 Pending Sectors counts. there are 3 spots to look at.

1) Pending Sector Counts - These are sectors on the hard drive that it is having trouble accessing the data from. It try and try to get the data. after so many tries the next one of two things happen.

2) It gets the data, reallocates it to a backup sector, which hard drives have a few thousand of, and then marks that spot that was failing as bad and it never uses it BUT it doesn't show that the spot as a bad sector because it was able to RECOVER the data from it.

3) It can't recovery the data and it gets marked as a Bad Sector.

I pretty much consider Pending Sector counts as Bad sectors only because it is trying to get the data and it hadn't gotten it yet.

I would replace the hard drive. The only thing is cloning a drive with pending sector counts can be a pain if you don't have the right software. Most of the free ones will fail if you have any bad/pending sectors and too many reallocated sectors.

I was planning on doing it all myself, but do you think it'll be easier to just go into best buy or something and have them do the cloning/install?

I would try it yourself first. You never know you may get luckly. If not you may either have to buy software or see if bestbuy can do it.
