Hi all! My hard drive might be a goner, but I'm hoping to get input/opinions, since most of the tests I ran said I was fine.
Okay so last night I got a popup saying "windows detected a hard disk problem" and gave me an option to start backing up. While the red X of the popup didn't look right to me, I did just switch to Windows 10 and I know things look slightly different, so I went ahead and copied my documents/photos/music on my back up drive, and started googling for answers.
My first thought was virus, and I did find articles saying a virus can trick the computer into thinking there is a problem, yet nothing but a few trackers were found when I scanned with SuperAntiSpyware.
I took a look at Security and Maintenance, it said all drives are working properly, but I looked at the reliability history and there was a critical event saying:
"Windows Disk Diagnostic detected a S.M.A.R.T. fault on disk HGST HTS545050A7E380 (volumes C:\). This disk might fail; back up your computer now. All data on the hard disk, including files, documents, pictures, programs, and settings might be lost if your hard disk fails. To determine if the hard disk needs to be repaired or replaced, contact the manufacturer of your computer. If you can't back up (for example, you have no CDs or other backup media), you should shut down your computer and restart when you have backup media available. In the meantime, do not save any critical files to this disk."
I looked back and while it showed I had critical events before (all oddly starting in December but w/e), this was my first disk failure warning.
So I went a head and followed directions other people have gotten.
I went to my computer -> drive c -> properties -> tools -> error checking, and nothing was found.
I couldn't find a diagnostic program from Toshiba (my laptop brand) but I read that I could use Seagate's.
Did the Short DST, it passed.
Did the S.M.A.R.T. test, it passed.
Did the Long Generic, it stopped responding at one point but I didn't touch it, and it started going again, only to hit 45% and tell me it failed.
All the solved posts I read had failed all the tests, and I only failed that one, so while I am eyeing new drives on Amazon (my one year warranty passed in October) , I'm hoping to get some input from others and maybe other people who have passed most of the tests can benefit as well.
I read another post that recommend Speccy to take a look at a hard drive, so I went ahead and did that, and I don't understand most of it other than it's telling me the status is good and that I need to turn off my computer more often omg.
