Windows explorer ties up 99% of CPU

I have an Abit TH7-II RAID motherboard with a pair of WD 100GB hard drives in a RAID0 configuration. Occasionally when I am using Windows Explorer (XP) to look at the files on the Raid array (my D: drive) my computer will start getting really slow even after I close all of my applications. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del to look at the task manager shows that explorer.exe is using 99% of CPU resources. It never quits....even though I am not doing anything. I have tried installing from a fresh XP install but every once in a while it returns. Any ideas?
