Windows Protection Errors

Yes, I have a AMD K62-350MHz ASUS P5A Mobo with 2x64MB sticks of generic RAM and a Voodoo Banshee 16MB card. My problem is whenever I bootup it most of the time will give me a windows protection error or say it is safe to shut down. Then I have to reboot in Safe Mode then reboot in normal mode and then reset my video settings since they mysteriously disappear back to 16 colors and then reboot in normal mode again to have everything up and running fine. Once it is up and running I have no problems with it at all. So, my question is could this be the RAM or does my video card need updated drivers or could it be both? Thanks in advance.
