Windows XP freezes randomly

Hello,
my laptop( dell inspiron 640m) has been freezing randomly since the last 2 months. There is no error msg displayed...just an abrupt freezing of the screen with a jarring sound. I have installed the os a few times but still the problem persists. Tried a lot of things, but pchhhhh. So can anyone please help me in diagnosing the problem and ind a solution.

Sounds like something inside the laptop is making the harsh noise.. if it's loud?... you may need to have it checked for something lose or damaged. The only hardware that I can think of that makes that type of noise is the hard drive or a cooling fan, but all temperatures seem adequate, so the Hard Drive would be my guess. Random freezes may indicate a failing hard drive, so install Hard Disk Sentinel to get an idea of what condition the Hard Drive is in.

You may be able to visually check the processor cooling fan to make sure. The Hard Drive can easily be extracted and replaced in seconds, if it checks bad in the application, if you can get a hold of another one, that would be advised to test if it solves the problem... but if you'd rather have it professionally checked that would be best.

Hi,
Thank you for the reply. I have cleaned the fan just a few days back, so that may not be the reason. I am getting an warning message( audio drive on high definition audio bus) and then a dialog box appears asking to enter the software CD. Cud that be an issue.

And as u had said in the mail to check the condition of the hard drive, i have done that. Plz chk the below details. Hope that might give you some more info.

The audio message is not related to the problem in question... it's about an issue with the audio driver.. to solve it: if you have the driver CD insert it and see if it solves the warning message.. if you don't have the CD, see if the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 888111 helps you solve it... click on the Fix-it troubleshooter and if it doesn't help, download the Hotfix.

The lines in the Hard Drive Sentinel report highlited in red (in your quote), indicate the problems the application found in your Hard Drive. Those results seem to indicate your hard drive is damaged and may soon fail. The Report says your HD is at 12% health and 13 days of estimated remaining lifetime but that's not in calendar days... it's more like an average expectancy which doesn't necessarily have to be accurate... it's an estimated time that may actually turnout to be much longer... or on the other hand shorter. The 13% in HD health isn't much different... I must mention that one of my hard drives was reported with 20% health when it was working perfectly... but it suddenly died. This means the 100% in performance is not a god indicator of the general HD condition, it just indicates how it was working at the moment the reading was taken, which was probably taken when the HD was at idle... so that 100% really says nothing.

The S.M.A.R.T. Details on the second line reports a failed read test... that seems to correspond with the random freezes it's having. The 516 bad sectors may be a good indicator of the HD's platter's general state of health.

The line saying: "Recommended Acoustic Level . . . . . . . . . . . : Max performance and volume (FEh)"
Is possibly related to the jarring noise you hear, which is probably the actuator arm having trouble reading the disk platter.

The line saying: "Max performance and volume (FEh)".. is to me in to technical terms to know exactly what it means but while searching for related information, it seems that FEh coincides in most cases with failed Hard Drives.

So based on that report I would recommend you buy a replacement Hard Drive and backup your files as soon as possible. Check what the Hard Drive Sentinel Overview tab says in the section with the green background... If it says take immediate action or something similar, that's what you should do as soon as possible.
