I am currently working on a computer that has known issues with the hard drive (consistent Code 51 errors, routine BSOD). I found the same version of the hard drive that is installed (Samsung HD160JJ). Small 160 GB hard drive. I was able to partition it in a Windows Vista machine, and when installed in the computer with issues, BIOS found the drive. When loading Windows, Explorer did not find it. I went into "computer management" and was able to see it for a second. It then disappeared. I boot the computer back up, and it is there again. While there (all the times that I tried), it was labeled as "foreign" and the filing system was "dynamic".

After reading about the dynamic and trying to change it over to "basic" (I believe that is the term) it switched over. Then, when formatting the drive, the BSoD.

I believe my main issue is that Windows XP does not come with a SATA controller for the NON-Bootable drives. If it is labeled as SATA0 and has the operating system on it, it would be fine (I believe, because that is exactly what it is using now).

If it is a driver issue, where do I get that? I have check the HP website (It is a HP XW4400), and they have nothing for this hard drive (Samsung HD160JJ, which is the factory model that came with the computer back in 2007.

I am just looking to copy/clone/image the main drive so that I have a backup for when the original hard drive fails.

Any thoughts, ideas are greatly welcomed!! Thank you in advance!

XP didn't come with SATA drivers for any drive, bootable or not.

I have only added the required SATA drivers needed to INSTALL XP on a SATA drive. I have done this with different machines, and in both cases I needed to obtain the correct drivers from the MB (chipset) manufacturer. However, I have not needed to add SATA drivers to an existing XP install.

That being said, I suggest you first lookup if the drivers are available for your particular MB, and how to add them to the existing OS. Should be like adding any other driver?

I'm surprised that your XP OS even recognized the added SATA drive at all.
