Change is inevitable in life. I can live without the Start Menu in Win8. A few additional clicks is no big deal. It's not like all we do is to start and shutdown the system the whole day. It will take a day or two to figure things out. Just as long as Win8 has a lot of performance and security improvements and is rock solid, it is fine with me.

So with the new UI not being favored from Windows 8 users, what was the point of Windows 8 again? Windows 7 is pretty solid at the moment and it is not even that old as XP was when Vista came out.

regardless how hard windows 8 nuts try to defend the new OS its still more cumbersome then windows 7 and it takes more time to get things done in it with a mouse, and people used to stuff for the better part of 18 years now won't want to switch period ... if they'd like that Ubuntu and other Linux distros would have had a bigger absorption...
the fact that you actually have to write a small chapter on how to get basic functionality out of an OS that first advertised it self on ease of use, and more so with its latest version kinda proves the opposite...

@velocityg4:
"It won't be Linux even the easiest Linux is far too complex for the average user."
I think you are underestimating the average user. I have set up several Linux mint and Lubuntu systems for non-technical people and they were working as well or better than previously (XP/Vista?Win 7 users) within a day. Modern Linux desktops can be very easy to use - you just have to choose appropriate distributions.

I always never used the start button from xp on.

Thats why we have Desktop shortcuts, and pin apps to taskbar.

I love windows 8 on a 55" TV as a HDPC/gaming rig.

Must easier to READ instead of getting a magnifying glass to try to read the shitty font under start button.

If they at least add the start button, I hope they dont take it out totally, I Like how its so easy to read big tiles, like Steams BIG PICTURE mode on my HDTV. That combined with W8 for the games that arn't on steam is a god-send.

And wow, it's a whole $40. Whoooo hooo. A tank of gas, a few shitty movies, a few crappy Cd's, a few crappy meals at fast food. And people are crying still.

as a matter of fact, My Taskbar is always set to "Auto" hide aswell as that shows how much it really get's used.

And not to mention you can always "Create your own TOOLBAR" and pick the programs you want on it put it on your taskbar, and you have your own START menu. but im sure half the people upset over it are too stupid to figure that out, go figure.

To bad microsoft can't create a program to "elimate" the stupid gene.

[citation][nom]wemakeourfuture[/nom]The Search -> Apps lists everything (alphabetically, grouped by program) ...[/citation]
Perhaps, but that's not too much helpful if you don't remember name of app and have 300+ of them installed.
Start->{program type}->{subgroup}->{executable} is much faster and easier to found.

Hell, if you add scripts, batches, several shortcuts with different parameters, you can easily hit thousands of apps and that's impossible to search or look thru metro.

I have been using windows 8 for a while now, thought i think its really good if you on a tablet , usning it on a desktop is a complet failuer. 1. why would i ever want to touch my desktop screen, it would give me a back pain using it often, and it would be annoying to have to clean it all the time. 2 using modern ui with a mouse results in, having to do extra to do even the most simpel thing, ex. closing a window, i can do that in one click now, so why would i waste time moving the window all the way down to bottom of my screen to do the same, and the list goes on. its simply not meant for a desktop pc. its disappointing that they released this windows knowing that its not good enought with a mouse and keyboard.

I refuse to buy windows 8 because of the start button. Regardless of what some surveys said, I never met anyone that doesn't use the start button. Bring it back, or I and countless others won't buy it.

I don't care what other people think, or what alternatives are out there, I have been a windows user since windows 95, and it is unacceptable for them to just alienate all there loyal customers. I've tried windows 8, and I "HATE" it. Again, not cuz of metro, but because there is no start button, and it's a pain in the ass using windows with as a desktop. I actually prefer mouse and keyboard over touch.

Microsoft needs to stop trying to be apple.

Another thing they need to do, rename windows RT so that people don't confuse it with Windows 8. It's to confusing to the average consumer, and it's gonna get people thinking that windows 8 rt is full windows 8.

Fix the start menu and i'll buy windows 8, otherwise i'll just stick with windows 7.

First of all, I disagreed with Microsoft making a seemingly "Touch Screen UI" for the desktop, or laptop for that matter. Most of us don't have a touch screen. Secondly, I don't understand why Microsoft did not include an option to turn on or turn off the start screen and/or the start menu.

I was thinking about diving into Windows 8. Now that I see that adding back some Windows 7 features could be in its future, Microsoft just might get my money. Until then, I'm staying with Windows 7.

Statistics show people don't use application menus or desktop icons anymore. That is why Microsoft moved to tiles and easy to use sidebars and an app screen. All of this works the same as on iOS so it should be familiar to everyone. Windows 8 is a breeze to use. It has really wowed me and everyone I know. You need to give it an honest try, not a 30 second sit down. Pin your apps to the start bar or do an easy search. Better yet, get a touchscreen!

[citation][nom]SlackerUI[/nom]Forcing a tablet UI on to the desktop is the single worst mistake tha M$ has ever done! For those of you that say of it just takes a little time to learn, It takes more time and then requires more actions to get to the useful functions and desktop applications the most enterprises use! Oh, and employees have to be paid for that time, and the extra time it will always take them when using a tablet interface on a desktop! So all you Metro UI fans out there, reach deep down into your slacker pockets and pay the costs of the lost productivity that the windows 8 metro UI will cause, if the start screen is not returned! If you want the METRO UI the get a damned Tablet, but for those that need a stable UI for efficiency and productivityplease do not fix what in not broken! Please no more ribbons or tiles on the desktop EVER![/citation]

FFS, Who is FORCING you? Its there for the devices that make no goddamn sense to use a KB/M on. Im typing this all from my Windows 8 PC using a KB/M. I dont remember Microsoft FORCING me run out and buy a touch screen monitor, FORCING me to throw out my old non touchy monitor and KB/M in order to upgrade. So, NO, they did NOT in fact FORCE ANYTHING. Its a goddamn option, in case you wanted to be able to.
FFS, this non sense is getting more than a little irritating now. And also, there are like, what, a dozen or so different ways to bring back the start menu? Why not just use one of those, or stick with an older Goddamn version of Windows if you think it will be that goddamn costly or you are just that close minded to use something a little different.

btw, the tiles is great in some way, When u use start menu, u eyes are looking at start menu, So why not do a full screen while u are using it?

This guy down here(at page2) pretty much speak everything win8 does, if u look in a diff way. Even tomshardware did mention about it, spend ur time pin ur app to start screen.
[citation][nom]universal remonster[/nom]So is it the size of the start screen that bothers you? The start menu is essentially just another screen but smaller. How is opening the start menu and start screen any different? Same steps involved.Ok, so can you please explain how Start Menu -- > All Programs -- > Adobe -- > Photoshop is faster than Start Screen -- > Photoshop Tile. Or, are you referring to the few programs you have pinned to Start menu, in which case is exactly the same thing as pinned to start screen? Web and email are usually pinned on your task bar in Win XP, Win 7, right? Sooo... Pin them to your Win 8 taskbar? Word and Excel? Start Screen -- > Word. Start Screen -- > Excel. That's pretty easy. No different than Start Menu -- > Word. Start Menu -- > Excel.Though I own Windows 8 because it was available for $14.99 for buying a Win 7 laptop, I still haven't installed it. What I don't understand is the rage and hostility from people over Windows 8. People act as though they do not have free will.Seriously. If Win 8 doesn't fit your use model, don't use it. If you don't like the new interface, don't use it. Not I nor anyone else is going to come to your home and violate you because you didn't upgrade, or even care in the first place. And besides, if Windows 7 is the greatest thing Microsoft has made and it's so perfect, why are trying to upgrade from it?[/citation]

Linux is pretty easy to use, you know, until something goes wrong and you need to use BASH or something a little more involving than clicking on some icons. Id love for you to tell me with a straight face that "average" users are going to be comfortable trying to figure that crap out

http://ss64.com/bash/

Until Linux is more "dumbed down" and less fragmented (everyone seems to have their own distro, now a days), it will never be a choice for the "average" user. Thats probably why it never took over the desktop like it was predicted to do, time and time again, while also being free.

Sadly, thats what the majority of the most outspoken opponents have done. Tried the OS for a couple minutes, balked at the fact that there is no button in the bottom left corner anymore, and began to piss and moan at the top of their lungs about how horrible the OS is compared to [insert random version of Windows]. Either that, or they try and trump up Mac or Linux as the White Knights of other operating systems, destined to save us all from our tyrannical slave masters, M$$$ (Extra $$ for emphasis!)

Im not saying everyone has to like it, but hell, with as many different ways to get the start menu back, and to avoid the Modern UI, I dont see what the big frikkin deal is. Modify Windows 8 to your liking, or stick with [insert random version of Windows] or other OS you want to use. :sarcastic:

Yeah, that would be the only reason at this point for me to be happy about the Start menu returning. How did any of these people survive, Pre-Windows 95?

I really like Windows 8, Quick, Smooth and the browsers I use just seem to look better. I did install Classic Shell to get my start button back again but after setting it to boot directly to desktop, I found I actually missed the start page (Metro UI) So I brought it back and have the best of both worlds, The start page and the start button.

Im proud to say that im one of the last of the Xp-icans. win8 is just as bad for power consumption and disk useage with win7 caused me to have a pocket killing wallet busting electric bill in 30 days $500. I tested win8 same power consumption and sucky performace after install and the disk space useage is just as bad. Im going to stay with xp as long a i can.

It seems that most of the fanatics getting worked up in support of Metro have never had to support or train more than a few people at a time... if any. The next time you get ready to post "You could do this" or "Just do that" imagine you're the training coordinator or IT admin. Also imagine that your smallest call center has in excess of 1000 people, most of which know just enough about PC's to do their job. Simple problems that you take for granted disrupt these peoples' day and productivity. Now imagine you're installing Win8 across the company. Congratulations! Your just-try-this-and-just-do-that attitude has crippled productivity and your clients are out for blood. This could have been mitigated by retraining, a massive expense, which means accounting, the CFO, the CEO and stockholders are out for blood.

No thanks. Win7 does ok. I'll wait for something that's close enough to it that the above is not an issue... or something that's radical enough and has advantages that would justify such a headache. Until then, go back to mom's basement and STFU while the big kids play.

This is not just about personal preference. This is about the bottom line and keeping clients/vendors/bosses sated.

Step 1) Move your mouse cursor to the bottom left of the screen.
Step 2) Click

Ta-Da! You just opened the start menu!!! Now here's the hard part, closing it. . .

Step 1) Move your mouse cursor to the bottom left of the screen.
Step 2) Click

Windows 8 is much better with regards to power consumption than XP and so is Win7. If you don't believe it, just look at laptop battery life reviews.

(Also, $500 in 30 days? No way)

using insults shows how short minded you can be, grow up... when you have 10 desktops that are high end work stations that are dell precision t5500 (32gb ddr3 1600mhz ecc ram dual xeon x5680 cpus@ 8c/16t and 3 hdd 10k rpm running raid5 and nvidia quatro fx graphics) running crappy os software; the power consumption adds up fast in reguard to laptops; bought cheap walmart special with win7 allready installed had 2.5 hr runtime on battery, dumped the disk and downgraded xp the battery life improved to 3.5hr to 4.25 hours and the plus this laptop runs cooler and quiet. modern chinese proverb: more code need to execute to get the job done; more electical current needed to represent the code for the job to be done.

There will always be conservative traditionalists. Luckily, most of the time they are made to bow in the face of progress. Windows 8 may be difficult for former Windows users to get used to, from my experience, I think it's far easier to use for new users. You might argue that there are no "new" Windows users since the world is dominated by Windows PCs, keep in mind that there are many people from older generations who are just embracing technology now and kids who are starting to learn to use computers.

Guys i am using windows 8 for a year now... at first i was frustrated with UI but after a couple of months u get used to it and you feel weird when you use the start menu.. and if you learn the keyboard short cuts.. , try and use arrow keys you won't have any problem with UI plus windows 8 offers a ton of features .. when you get the feel of it... its much more time saving than the start menu... Note this everyone hates change .... so i think a lot of guys just need time and you will never go back to the start menu again ....
P.S- i don't work for Microsoft.. i am just a guys who loves windows 8
