My Athlon 64 3500+ was overheating, so I decided to switch thermal compounds. So, I go to remove the heatsink, but it was really tough. What ended up happening is that as the heatsink was removed, it took the CPU with it (the lever on the ZIF socket stayed closed). I thought, d'oh to myself, but everything appeared ok. I put new compound on the CPU, put the chip back, heatsink on, and booted up.
Nothing happened. Well, all the fans turned on, but no video came up.
I took the processor back out, and noticed that a pin had been bent all the way, making contact with the base of another pin. Aww damnit. I was able to straighten the pin, and it went back into the socket easily. I booted up, and again, the fans turned on but no video. Same as before.
So, I figured the chip got fried. So, I went and bought a new one. Put it in to the motherboard and booted up. Same thing, fans but no video. So, I figured it was the motherboard that took a crap because of the bent pin. The motherboard is an MSI K8N Neo 2 nForce 3 board.
I went and bought a new motherboard, this time an ABit AV8 Via KT800 board (was the only 939 board at the store I went to). I put the whole system together, and turned it on. Same thing, fans turn on, but no video, but the motherboard goes into a reboot loop.
So, I thought, could my video card, a eVGA GeForce 6800, could have gone bad? I tried a new video card. No difference.
I took some RAM out of another computer and tried it. Again, no difference.
I tried without plugging in the HD, DVD, or floppy. Again, no difference.
I tried a different power supply. Again, no difference.
I've built probably 20 systems in my life. Never has this kind of thing happened to me. I'm totally stumped. Any toughts?
