x800 Temperatures...

I'm curious what others are getting for desktop vs. load temperatures
for their x800 pro/xt cards.

My x800xt-pe runs cooler than my old 9800 pro.
At default clock speeds, I'm getting 37C at windows desktop, with a
room temp of 73F. Under heavy load (multiple runs of 3DMark03,
stopping near end of nature scene), it maxes out at 56C. Overclocked
to 540/574 MHz (core/mem), I get 38C at rest and 63C max. So far,
I've never heard the fan spin up... in fact, I've never heard the fan
at all. BTW, my max stable overclock is 551MHz.

That's what Tom's Hardware reports. The X800 runs cooler that the 9800
series of cards.

According to 'overdrive', I get 53C in desktop on my x800pro.
Like you, I hear the fan come on quite loud for
about 4 seconds in POST, then quiet. I checked,
and it does run all the time although almost inaudible.
So it slows down, but doesn't stop.

Mine aslo is very cool Because the heatsink is awsome heavy copper any the
fan is silent
Card rocks games are very good max out on antilasing

53C at desktop? That seems a bit high... I get 37C min/56C max at
default clock speed. Do you have it overclocked? What is your case
temp?

I'm running at 537/560 GPU/mem.

What is your case

I'm looking at the 'overdrive' tab under my advanced display settings.
It shows two graphics, current temp
and overdrive level. What does the latter do? Apparently it is
some sort of monitor cause it isn't adjustable.

That explains it... your case is smoking.
My x800xt also runs 15C above the case temperature when similarly
clocked. The difference is that my case is much cooler. It took a
lot of trial and error, but I was able to achieve a case temp within
two degrees of room temperature. And my case is relatively quiet.
If you can get your case temp down, I'll bet you can add 15Mhz to your
core speed.

It's just an indicator of the overdrive vs default clock speeds. You
should have overdrive enabled, even when overclocking with a 3rd party
utility, since it will reset your core to the default speed if it
overheats.

The indicator shows only one speed, and it is about equal to the
default. Should it show the actual speed? What is the value of this
indicator if it only shows what is already shown on the overclocker tab?

It probably should, but it doesn't. For the x800xt, it shows 519MHz
default speed, and 526MHz with overdrive enable... a pitiful 7Mhz
overclock. The indicator doesn't change when I overclock it further.

On a Far Cry timedemo I get 56/51 fps with OD disabled/enabled.
Overdrive is outdahere.

Only enable overdrive after overclocking, not before... or it will
lower your core speed. I don't think it should be costing you
performance unless your chip is cooking, and the clock speed is being
reset to the default. If that's the case, keep your receipt handy.
