Hi I am getting either the i7 4770k or the i7 4930k. Let's not worry about the price of the processors, I want something more objective based om the motherboards and upgrade capability.

I was looking to see if there would be a new x89 chipset for lga 2011 processors, but couldn't find much.

I will be doing some video editing work from time to time as well as photoshop design software and also gaming.

im probably going to upgrade to haswell e at the end of the year and I wanted to get a processor and motherboard that can give me value if I dont upgrade.

So say I get the x79 will the x89 support the 4930k? And will the z97 be better than the x79 for my needs? Will these chipsets support newer processors like the haswell e skylake etc? When I do upgrade, I'll probably sell the processor and/motherboad so I just wanted the best returns in terms of money and value in the time being.

Also ill probably be getting an ssd and probably keep to 1 card for now maybe 2 in the future future.

right now I have an lga775 cheap motherboard with a core2quad so im aching for an upgrade. Would thr i7 4930k be worth the extra money on the motherboard? Or should I stick with i7 4770k and z97 then upgrade the processor? Also, would the 2011 chipset support the newer processors or no? When will the x89 be released? (If it is 2011)

Hi. First, I don't think there will be an X89. it will be X99. If you have the budget, then by all means go with the socket 2011. I am running a 4770k and it benched quite well and I was happy with it, somebody came in on that forum with a rig with an X79 based 2011 Board running a Sandy E and his benchies blew mine away. Those things can turn out some impressive numbers and who knows what they will be like with the Haswell E. Next choice down would be the 4770k on an X97 board.

What is your timeframe?

If your primary usage is video editing, then many cores is good.
If your primary usage is gaming, then fewer, faster cores is better.

My guess is that you will be wildly pleased if you can wait until June for a i7-4790K(aka devils canyon) and a Z97 chipset motherboard.
4.0 base clock and much higher oc headroom.
I am guessing a $350 price tag.
That optimizes gaming, but is no slouch on multi core apps.

If you are looking towards 6 core cpu's, then you are looking at $600 class cpu's and the current X79 chipset

Well, i ended up purchasing the 4930K, I won't buy the new processors like devil's canyon till the price goes down a bit. maybe at the end of the year or next year!

They usually go down when they are getting ready to introduce something else.

Actually that is Z79 & Z99. :) I know the next gen 2011 socket wil have some changes and you can't run the processor intended for that, on, the 2011 Z79 board. There are two new chipsets coming, one is the Z79 and I forgot what the other one was. One is a socket 2011 and intended for the Haswell-E and the other for the next gen 1150 stuff.

Yeah, I think so. I think Z97 will be a socket 1150 and the Z99 a socket 2011 for the Haswell - E .

Z97s are out (many of them, more to come) for socket 1150 They work with the current Haswell CPUs, the Haswell refresh CPUs and will work with Broadwell when those come to be released...on Socket 2011, the current chipset is X79 which runs through the SB-E CPUs, next up is the X99 which will run the Haswell-E CPUs

Yep. I had forgotten that I had recommended the Z97 boards a couple of times when I found them in stock.

Pardon.....The 2011 socket is currently X79 with X99 coming up, and X79 has been around for over 2 years now

My bad. I should've said z87 and z97. Totally left my mind

Yes....I was mainly replying to Coastie65 and his response that there hasn't been a X series chipset since X58, which makes no sense at all (and says there's a Z79 (there isn't) and that a Z99 is coming...Yet up earlier same person talks about X79 and X99 - almost like it's two different people using the same user id

Yes, I agree! I just wanted to clarify that the title error was mine. I know there is no x97, but didn't realize I had typed that for the title. Can't wait to see what these new chip-sets and cpu's will offer!

Can't say for all boards but I've had the Z87 Hero since mid last year, and grabbed the Z97 Hero and it's even better, OCs better, handles even faster DRAM (and for right out of the box has been amazing), most new mobo often have problems with fast DRAM, and it can take a few BIOS updates to get them caught up, I popped 16 GB of 2666/11 in and enabled XMP - no problem what so ever, OCed them to 2800 - again no problems - pulled a 4x4GB set of 2933 out of a clients rig and again, smooth as silk. The Z97 also seems to run Cooler, Can OC with less voltage to the same (4.6) I had on the Z87 with the same CPU and OC higher, better BIOS - just, simply, another great mobo 😉

Wow that's blazing fast! And that's awesome how well the motherboard performs. Will you upgrade next year for DDR4?

Yes, I Was having a memory blank when I heard z79 and z99, As there is X79 systems not Z79.

Yeah. Got "Z" on the brain for some reason and got a bit sideways. I have a desktop sitting here running an i7 960 on an X58 board. I think that Chipset may be based on the processor. With the Architecture of those i7 9XX's, those things were huge compared to the 775 and 11xx socketed processors. Course we are talking more pins too ( 1366 and I'm thinking that the 2011 as well ). I haven't seen a 2011 Processor, but the 1366 measured about an 1 1/2 across. Anyway, I stand corrected. As many times as I have been through those boards, I don't know how Z got attached to them.
