Xbox Controller read as Unknown Device

was playing with my xbox 360 wired controller without problems. Since yesterday it tells me an unknown device is connected whenever I plug in my controller. It then proceeds to install drivers for the so called 'unknown device'.
My controller show up as 'unknown device' in the device manager.
I tried reinstalling, restarting, different usb ports, tested the controller on my xbox (works perfectly normal, so no hardware issue).
when I install the so called 'driver' from the official microsoft hardware page, it only installs some kind of xbox 360 accessory desktop tool but not an actual driver.

this is getting really frustrating as I can't find an answer anywhere, and I really appreciate all the help I can get

does the controller still work with other computers or the xbox? ive had my usd items break before an dit still says its downloading and deticting the item but it does not work

I have run into this with a wireless Xbox 360 controller dongle. What solved the problem in my instance, I removed a USB device. The USB 2.0 hub did not have enough power output to power all of the devices spread across it. It might be a simple fix such as that.

Can you also check the contacts on the Xbox controller USB plug end? Sometimes those get damaged or corroded, still registering a device with the computer but not a full initialization of the device.

It works fine with my xbox, other usb devices work with my computer, I don't have an other computer to test my controller on.

Try unplugging all USB devices other than the xbox controller. Those things use quite a bit of power.

I found the solution!
I deleted the driver for 'unknown device' that my pc automatically installed
I removed any previous Windows 7 xbox360 accessory programs
I looked around the properties of the driver installer, and for some reason the compatibility was set to 'Windows Server 2008 (Service Pack 1)'. I tried setting it to Windows 7 (my OS)
I ran the installer, and when it was finished my pc recognized my controller and installed the correct software.

if you have win 8 it is not officially supported and if you have win 7 go here select your version of windows (32,64) and download proper driver
