Hello,

my issue as described in the title is : I get flickering in windows or using web browser ( 2d issues )
or when i get rid of flickering ( different drivers ) i get crashes when gaming.
I have updated the bios and tried all drivers from 13.12 to current beta drivers.
Whenever i have installed new drivers i would remove old ones i safe mode using ddu.
Important thing to say is when my computer crashes i get black screen and i cant even reset it i have to push the power button for 3 sec so that the machine turns it self off.

CPU :Intel, CORE I5-4690K 3.50GHZ , Coolermaster, CooMas Hyper212 Ev
Memory : G Skill, D3 8GB 1600-999 RipjawsX ( 2x 4gb )
Power : EVGA, EVGA SUPERNOVA 750 B2 80 PLUS
Motherboard : Asrock, Mod 1150 ASRock Z97 Extreme4
Graphic : XFX, XFX 3GB D5 X R9 280X Dual Fan BLACK
OS : Windows 7 - 64
Motherboard bios is updated.

Event log : system has crashed ( nothing there that would indicate any problem just saying that system has unexpectedly crashed ).

Temperatures of gpu cpu and system are low 30 C when not gaming to. Gpu goes to 50 max when playing league of legends.
Benchmarking cpu goes well. memory test went clean.
When i stressed GPU computer crashes when GPU reaches 70 C every time (69-70 c).

Sometimes when i get a crash and i turn my computer back on i get no signal on my monitor.
Then i have to unplug my graphic card and plug it back in ( one time i didnt even have to I just unplugged power and plugged it back in and it worked).

Did anyone have a similar issue and found a workaround?

btw. when i was using 2 monitors on extended displays i had no issue at all.
I even ran benchmark for the gpu with no problem ( that was few months ago ).

TLDR -

r9 280x crashing with bios updated ( black screen cant reset need hard shutdown )
Flickering if I am using different combination of drivers/bios.

Hello,

I have a bios update for the 280X's who experienced this issue, please PM me your Serial # and i will send you the correct bios to fix this issue.

Basically the idle clock states on the GPU are freaking the motherboard out. The bios update simply updates the idle speeds to be a little higher to correct this.

XFX Support

PM has been sent with Ticket number opened on xfx Support where serial can be seen.
If it is the same bios as one I have received from your support it doesn't offer a solution for my problem.
Link to received bios from xfx support is in the PM.

I just wanted to say HE IS THE MAN.

After several emails, opened ticket and whole lot of testing with bios/drivers i got a working one!

Please, can someone send me the BIOS? I opened a ticket, but they will take time to respond (T1506190030)

Hey Paulo, that would probably have been the newest bios for that model. I can also send a less recent revision to give it a shot. it should be a bios issue if its 2d flickering. (technically its an idle clock issue, not all motheboards get worried about the graphics card going into a lower power saving state.)

Just shoot me another email and see what else i have. If not, we can RMA it and replace it under warranty as well.

can you PM me the correct bios version to fix this issue as well? just installed my R9 280x and cant view any 2d video without this happening

Hello mitch2302, Are you sure you are having this issue? Does it play games fine? does it only flickering/crash when your idleing or doing mundane 2d tasks? How many screens are you running? What resolutions?

i would be happy to help you with this. For anyone reading this and is requesting a bios update. please create a ticket at xfxsupport.com. We need to verify your serial # to find the appropriate bios.

Please PM me the ticket # or your Serial #.

Thank you

Ok after some serious tinkering i finally figured out why these cards maybe crashing... I believe when the cards reach high temperatures the fans aren't kicking in to higher speeds, causing the cards to over heat and shut down. After buying a new power supply, switching out cards wasting crazy amounts of time loading older bios's, older AMD CCC. I'm 99% sure I solved my problem which was the symptoms as the op. I would get white flashes randomly and when playing games my computer would crash.....

My solution:

Download MSI After Burner; In settings, make sure unlock voltage control and force constant voltage is checked; also instead of user mode change it to kernel mode. Click OK you may have to restart your computer. Do so if asked.

Change your Core voltage to 1144***(read bot) leave everything else the way it is.. Now go to settings and on the tabs click on fan. you want to check enable user defined software. Predefined fan speed curve change to custom and check force fan speed update on each period.

Now on the graph I will show you where to put the grey squares... Fan speed is on the left (will be first number) and temperature is at the bot (will be 2nd number).. Make sure there is a square at the 20FanSpeed-30Temp, ~28-40, 50-50, 60-55, 70-60, 80-70, 100-90. Now click on OK. Beside the fan speed number there is a icon for "user define" click on it there should now be a green border around the fan speed. Click on the Auto above the number if there isn't a green dot beside it.
Run a game and see how it does.

Hope this works out for you guys as it did for me. CHEERS!!

***This is for people with the xfx r9 280x Double Dissipation as that is the card i have. I'm sure if you have the balck edtiion and just leave the core voltage unchanged and adjust everything else it would work for you too!

Does the fix apply to Black Edition Double D R9 280? I keep getting flickering and just built this computer. It's extremely frustrating.

Let me know if I should message my serial.

Can i also ask for new BIOS for r9 280x?

Hello there, it won't allow me to PM you for some reason. I'm having the exact same issue myself. May I please ave a copy of the bios?

Yes, shoot me the serial # of your GPU and email me at mark@xfxforce.com.

XFX support i also sent you an email about this topic. i sent my serial number in too. I notcied if i run MSI afterburner and turn down the core clock to 1000 and also in settings check to force consistant voltage and Disable ULPS it willl not do it as much. I still get a black screen in some 2d/internet applications. i cannot view any "twitch.tv" all black screen.

I would also like to have a new bios for my 280x. i will send u the serial number.

I had installed a earlier video card because my first card I sent back RMA, because it turns out the drivers were still on my computer from Nvidia. So it was glitching out.

Tutorial for proper driver installation.

1-Load windows with only your primary graphics card plugged in.

2-Disable any and ALL anti-virus/malware protection.

3-Download and Run the 15.10 (or latest) drivers from AMD.com (Omega drivers do not have Uninstall built in, you have to do it through add/remove, which is okay)

4-Choose to Uninstall/express (may not be available in newest version, download an older version) the existing drivers, and AMD folder

5-Restart the computer.

6-Disable any and ALL anti-virus/malware protection.

7-Run the 15.10 drivers from AMD.com

8-Choose to Install/Express the drivers

9-Restart. Confirm settings are working in windows.

10-Shutdown and add 2nd/3rd cards for Xfire.

11-Respond to this ticket if you have any further questions

** If you have nvidia drivers on your computer, you might need to run the Uninstall feature of Nvidias driver as well.

Mark hooked me up with this. SO thanks again mark from XFX

Hello XFX_Support, it won't allow me to PM you. I sent an email to you with the serial. May I please have a copy of the bios?
