Hi,

I was hoping you could help me out, I am also suffering from the dreaded 2D flickering issue with my XFX 280X Black Edition.
At first use I assumed that a future catalyst/drivers would fix this problem so used the temporary work around I saw online to make a profile in catalyst and force higher clocks but I still had some flickering.
Some months later I went ahead and tried all the available BIOS files from techpowerup gpu database that matched my card but they all failed so reverted back to original bios. I Later used the vbe7 method to modify my original BIOS with higher clocks and it worked but with some flickering.
More time passed and I stumbled on an updated BIOS file in the xfxstorage website dated June 2014 which worked but this time with very minimal flickering.

Recently I opened up ticket with xfx support in relation to getting supplied a replacement fan because one of them is starting to fail spin when below 80% in overdrive and also queried a newer bios and was turned down by xfx support for the fan being outside of warranty but after several(headaches) posts back and forth with xfx support they sent me a BIOS which gave me black and blue screens at windows login. After checking it out I found out that the supplied bios was for a different version of my board with Elpida memory rather than Hynix which mine is. I have since not heard back from xfx support after letting them know of the issues.
Whats even more crazier is when I reverted back to the June 2014 BIOS from the xfxstorage website I had severe issues of crashing which I spent hours and hours trying to resolve thinking it was windows and other applications. I am now back to my original bios when I first bought the card with the flickering which has resolved crashing and is stable but I have the flickering.

I think I will forever regret ever buying this card. I would appreciate if you could possibly have a look and see if there exists a hynix memory modules compatible BIOS that fixes the flickering and that is newer than the one on your xfxstorage website. Cheers

Dear XFX_Support. I have same flickering problem too. My serial - P2Y021595, email - boris.nmt@gmail.com

That is definitely a new serial #, it shouldn't have the 2d flickering issue. Did you create a ticket at xfxsupport.com?

I sent serial pm.

Hi XFX_Support!

My R9 280X Black Edition is crashing instantly if it tries to achieve stock speed. (Almost ruling out heat as an issue for that type of crash.)

If I underclock it using AMD Overdrive (Underdrive?) it lasts a bit longer.
The VRMs get pretty hot however (70C+), running FurMark, and it eventually crashes. Same with Valley Benchmark.
This happens with speeds as low as 850MHz for GPU and 1350MHz for memory.
(I will have to look at extreme underclocking, but that's not ideal as it would make a mockery of having a decent card.)

AMD FX 8320E
Mobo: GA-990FXA-UD3 V4
RAM: 16GB (2x8) HyperX 1600 DDR3

Power supply is a new Corsair VS550, and total system draw normally maxes out at about 350W. I hit 440W with FurMark and Prime95 running at the same time, but I didn't need this extreme load for crashes to happen at stock card speed. The VS550 has a single 12V rail rated at 504W.

Windows 7 64 bit SP1 and all updates.

My current BIOS is: 015.044.000.010
This was installed as per XFX on-line instructions to try to cure flickering.
I think an earlier BIOS might have been better for this card?

S/N is: P2Y024032

Thanks for any help (older BIOS perhaps).
Patrik

P.S: If the BIOS wouldn't turn up VRAM clock speeds to crazy levels just for running 2- or 3-headed that would be nice too. I figure 2x and 3x 150MHz should be enough?
P.P.S: Same for YouTube videos (even paused ones). No need for 1500MHz for those either! (Heck, I'd even take some flickering over this sort of wasteful behaviour!)

Hello,

This isnt a known issue, but sounds like a typical hardware failure. Its possible its the video card. Have you tried another GPU in this system? or completed a driver uninstall/reinstall? i would suggest running everything with Default clocks. If its not stable there, it wont be more stable in an overclock/underclock.

Hello XFX Support, I'm having issues where my display driver keeps saying "stopped responding but successfully recovered" but sometimes it crashes the game I have open (various games, none specifically) or crashes my computer altogether. I have tried submitting a ticket on XFX Support but it doesn't allow me to select a serial number, the drop-down box only has "select a serial" and I cannot type into the box next to it. Can I please also ask how I obtain my serial number? Do I need to look on the card itself? (I'm writing this away from the computer but have remote access, hence the question) Also, is it safe for me to post my serial number on this forum? As I can't find the pm option on this forum

Thanks in advance!

It is definitely the card. A GTX 770 has no issues.
I have tested both older, pre Crimson, drivers and the latest.

Could a card BIOS update have affected the factory OC settings so, for example, the voltages are now wrong? Leading to a crash when the factory OC speed is attempted.

Does XFX keep a database of all factory OC values for all individual cards, and if so, can a correct setting be loaded onto the card?

(I'm patrikf. Normal login didn't work so I now logged in with G+)

P.S: answering my own PS from above: it seems that whenever DP is in use RAM frequencies go up to max. This adds some 50 watts of power consumption. Looks like a pretty massive design flaw in the whole DP specification. A third clock on the card allowing us to avoid DP would have been nice.

XFX_Support I can't find where I PM you, I feel like an idiot hahaha. I just created an account here so I could ask you for the bios. I'm having this problem for months and I'm really happy to see it's only the VGA fault! How can I send you my card serial no?

Finding the serial #: If you are having trouble locating your serial number. Every XFX card comes with a set of barcodes, including some from AMD. The SN you need is on a small white sticker with an XFX logo on it. It should look something like this S/N: ABC123456

I flashed my bios with the one you provided. Indeed it stopped the flickering, but now I can't play Dota 2 for 5 minutes straight without crashing my video. My screen just goes black and my PC freeze. Is it possible to use this card without having any problems? God, that's REALLY annoying...

XFX_Support please help me. I have the same problem of bios. to update the bios video games close and get the error "video controller failure but recovered" please send me mail miguelgagu93@hotmail.com the correct bios of my video card. my card is r9-280x-td model and serial number Q1H012718 . THANK YOU FOR YOUR COLLABORATION. Sorry for me english. I am colombian.

"Q1H012718" is not a video card with a known flickering or bios issue. Revert back to your old bios and try focusing on the drivers or 3rd party software being the issue, not your GPU. did you create a support ticket yet?

This error happened to me after updating the BIOS, when I open the games, the screen goes black and the game is closed. Please send me the BIOS of my s / n Q1H012718. Sorry for me english

Hey support also having this issue, i don't know how to pm you but my serial is: Q5H038845 and my email is:

Just to recap when i flash my bios will i be able to update to the latest drivers without having the flickering issue?
