I recently bought parts to build a computer, and of those, one was a Gigabyte Gaming 3 motherboard and another was an XFX Radeon R9 290X graphics card. However, ever since I built it, my computer has never even detected that there was a graphics card in the PCI-E slot on the motherboard. I installed the most up to date drivers from Radeon, I tried every single slot on the motherboard, and I even rma'd my card twice, but to no avail. The card turns on and I can see the fans spinning, but no output is produced when I plug the card into the monitor. I finally got Gigabyte to let me RMA the motherboard, but I want to do one last post to try to see if anyone has any ideas that I can try, because the last thing I want to do is completely disassemble my computer to remove my motherboard. I'm seriously open to anything at this point.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4 GHz Quad-Core
Cooler: Corsair H100i Liquid CPU Cooler
Memory: G.Skill Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2666 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 1TB 2.5" SSD
Western Digital AV-GP 2TB 3.5" 5400RPM HDD
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 290X 4GB Double Dissipation Video Card
Power Supply: Rosewill Lightning 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Semi Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer
Wireless Adapter: TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter
Monitor: BenQ XL2720Z 144Hz 27.0" Monitor

And I'm going to guess you dont need my keyboard, my mouse, or my case.

I don't see any obvious weak links in that system. It's either the power supply or the motherboard. Both of which are of good quality. You don't have another power supply laying around you could test do you?

I unfortunately do not, as this is my first build.

Hello, Its possible the card is faulty, but i would like to confirm a few things... Its never produced a signal correct? have you gotten the system to produce a signal on a different card by chance? please visit xfxsupport.com or give me a quick call at 800 880 3225 to run through some basics to help diagnose the issue and possible start an RMA.

Hi Mark,
Correct, it has never produced a signal, and unfortunately I do not have another card to test, but it has worked on the motherboard graphics. However, I do not think that it is the cause, as I have already RMA'd the card twice, so I've had three separate cards.

I see. well, that is a good indicator that its not GPU related.... unless its GPU setup of course.

May be a strange issue with z97 chipset on this Mobo,

How are the monitors being hooked up? Are you using any adapters? this video card doesnt support vga-dvi adapters since the DVI are DVI-D.

Have you contacted Gigabyte, did you update to the January 29th, 2015 bios? http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4966#bios

Hello Igor,

When you say the CPU doesnt recognize the 290, are you still getting a signal? or is it no signal at all and you're not sure whats causing the lack of video output?

The video card isn't showing up in device manager, even as an unknown device, yet the fans on it spin, so there's power going to it, also the hdmi cable I plug into card/monitor is showing up as inactive

We had a customer call in and say that there is a bios update for this motherboard. It will fix it not detecting the r9 290 series. apparently. Did you already resolve this?

My vga cable is plugged into the monitor/mobo, I tried the hdmi cable/monitor, it says not active as in its not reading it I'm guessing, same thing with the white dvi cable

Hey Igor, you need to plug the monitor into the video card. Is the DVI cable not working? Are you using any adapters on it?

Hello, Thank you for creating this ticket with the XFX Technical Support Team. By the way, my name is Mark and I’m glad to assist you with your concern.

Have you tried plugging in the 6pin and other 8pin power connector?
Are you using any adapters?
Has it ever worked?
Have you tried any other video cards?
Have you tried it in any other computers?
What model PC or motherboard do you have?

Hey Mark,
For some reason, the Dvi cable isn't working, it just says inactive on the monitor. Is there anything I have to configure when switching from gva to dvi, because it's not picking it up
I haven't tried this with other computers since this is the only desktop in the house, everyone else has laptops, will RMA this one if I can't get it to work, the 6+2/6 wires from the PSU are connected and the led lights are on, and the fans spin, this is my parts list http://pcpartpicker.com/p/BWRd23

also he may need to go back in the bios and manually reselect pci-e as primary vga --[review motherboards manual ] I would at least try to shut down discharge the board - remove the card from the slot - remove motherboards battery to clear bios as normal - then reinstall the card hook up all wiring and monitor [dvi-d should be fine cause a dvi-I will not plug in to a dvi-d due to dvi-I has 4 extra pins for analog support ]

then reboot and go to bios and reset any settings that need to be - [if you load windows on a drive that the sata ports were set to ahci it will not boot unless you reset the sata ports back to ahci- most bios's will default to ide ]

anyway if the card now displays the splash screen or allows the display of the bios its working -- if it shows all that but blackscreens trying to load to windows desktop then there something else going on then reboot into safe mode and see if it will then go to desktop on the card

Will RMA it and order a dvi-d cable, will check back with results whenever I receive the items.
Also, when I plug in the HDMI, the monitor stays on VGA and HDMI is not active, do I have to somehow turn the HDMI on?

monitor stays on vga ??? when you use vga thats analog -- 2 things either the monitor is a analog / crt or its digital and cant convert to analog - then the 290 cards don't support analog native from its output ports with out a display port converter / adaptor - hdmi don't support analog dvi-d don't support analog ... is where amd shoots its self in the foot with there higher end cards - notice how NVidia all cards have dvi-I for full plug and play support analog and digital out of the box .. not to say amd cards are bad but there high end card don't support my full needs just there 280x and below will [ with dvi-I]

now we need to know what is your monitor [brand and model number ] this

What you said there about analog and crt is too confusing for me, new to this stuff, the monitor in an HP pavilion, I'll get you the model number once I get home
