Hello,
I've had my Xfx Radeon HD 6870 for a couple of months now and I've loved it in my new rig. But in the last week there's been a problem. My card kept overheating and I couldn't find the problem. But I've recently found it out... there's something wrong with my graphics card fan. It spins... and stop. And sometimes it'll spin very slow. It'll also stop spinning for around 1 minute... actually a long time especially when I'm running an intense game. If anyone has ANY way to fix this without me having to order a new one or a new fan... please come forth and help me out. All help and advice is appreciated.

No, there's nothing stuck inside. I actually took it out and looked at the fan. There's nothing noticeably wrong. If I spin the fan with my finger a little bit though there seems to be some sort of resistance.

I am having the exact same problem. The monitoring program I am using is showing the fan spinning at 90-100% but it is just starting and stopping when the temps are 90C+. It seemed to spontaneously fix itself the past two days after i updated the drivers, and the fan spun up fine, but it is doing it again this morning.

It runs normal when I first turn my computer on, and then it starts and stops again. again. It basically runs normal, then stops. Then goes again... and stops. Over and over. I actually feel some sort of resistance when I spin it with my finger, and it doesn't spin how It did when I first got it. Also before the starting-and-stopping thing happened, it also started getting hotter. I think the fan has something slowing it down on the inside. Maybe it needs to be greased? I can't know because I'm not sure how I open the fan up and fix it. It seems when I set the fan speed down to around 60 it stops. But it's also still slow... so It doesn't properly cool my graphics card. If anyone can help I'd be grateful. I don't feel like ordering a new graphics card.

I had a similar problem but on a GeForce 9600GS. I took it to the local expert and when he took the fan apart he told me the bearings had gone which is why it had slowed down then stopped.
I bought a cheap fan from Amazon which provided sufficient cooling for browsing, word processing, videos, etc. but it can't cope with gaming.
Spend a bit more on the fan and you might be OK.
It took my fan 3 years to go though, a few months seems a short time for it to wear out.

Yeah... I'm surprised how short of a live the fan has had. I think I'm going to buy a $130 Radeon HD 7770. It should suit my needs... it's also newer and put together better. I'll get one with two fans too. I guess there's no solution 😛

It's a down grade! A pretty big down grade too!

Why not just buy an aftermarket 6870 heatsink that costs ~$50!

Make sure your card is a reference one.

yeah look at getting an arctic cooling accelero twin turbo. Install is pretty easy and it will keep your temps around 65c at full load. check out NCIX.com I bought two of them from their website for $45 each, which at the time was considerably cheaper than newegg.

Thanks for the help both of you. But muffin... I think I'll go with the Gelid one! The card is the same ... regardless of the manufacturer? Right? I have an XFX Radeon HD 6870 so hopefully the fan will fit. Thanks for the video and help, all of you!
