Ok guys... I'm new to the forums so forgive me if this is a subject that everyone has talked about before.

I’m a speed freak, tweaker, screwer upper, and a tester. Combine all of these while trying to find out if XP is better than 98SE in a gaming environment is like kicking yourself in the JUNK and asking for seconds.

I've got the following:
Athlon 1.333
ABIT KT7A-RAID
ELSA Geforce 2 Ultra
Santa Cruz - Helped me lick that B'bug
768 Megs of CRUCIAL PC133 RAM
60GIG IBM HD
40GIG IBM HD
--------------------------------------------------
Situation: Poor gaming performance in XP. One game will run well in OpenGL and but poor in another game. Same issues with D3D also.

Here is what I've tried to fix it:
Newest Elsa Drivers
Newest Detonator Drivers
Newest Via 4in1
AGP Patch
Ran at AGP 2x and 4x with and without Fast Writes
60Mhz Refresh issue corrected - All apps run at max refresh
Took all PCI devices out and ONLY had Video CARD running
Disabled USB and used a PS2 Mouse

I probably tried some other tweaks here and there but the video just looks horrible in most cases. I'm not bashing XP in any way.... I love the stability and I'm running it on my second machine (Productivity Machine) which is running great... but dislikes games also. Remember that the games run but just not as fluid as 98SE. Is there something I'm missing?

I had 4 buddies of mine over this weekend. 2 were running XP, 1 with 2000, and the other was running 98SE... The XP and 2000 guys said they never had problems but my question to them was… PERFORMANCE. The 98SE machine was a 1.333 like mine with the same setup. The other machines were AMD 1.4Ghz with GF3’s …… The Win2000 machine and the XP machines were running exactly the same “For the most part” with no major problems… yet the video performance was still half/ass in the majority of the games we ran.

Have any of you conducted thorough/detailed tests like this?

Welcone!!! You should fit right in.

That's it in a nut shell.
I don't care what you do, I doubt very much that you will get the proformance with XP that you do with Win98se in games.

All I noticed was the performance kick I got from going from a P3 @ 933 with Win ME and GeForce 256 DDR to an Athlon XP 1800+ with Win XP and GeForce3 (overclocked to Ti500 speeds). Went from 2893 to 8137 3DMarks 2001 and I can run the complete suite of test now!

I've heard maybe about 500 points penalty for running under Windows XP? I wouldn't trade away the stability and ease of use of Win XP for 500 additional points.

Didn't see any jarring videos when I ran my favorite games.

If your game seems sluggish and is perhaps an old game, try out the game in the Win 95 compatibility mode to see if it will speed it up.

For example, Battlezone 1 seemed sluggish and unstable to me until I specified that the game is to be run in the Windows 95 compatibility mode.

i don't think so.
i test both os in the same comp with same games & 98se is almost always forward XP.

if you know you don't know, the way could be more easy. 😎

So you say you are having the same performance issues labdog?

It's funny, the 2 XP guys that came to my house were saying how great XP was with games until they saw 98SE against their machine.

XP performance is wayyyyyy better than 98SE though... file transfer, stability, etc... the list goes on.... Until games are built around XP.. I guess we can expect to have this type of performance...

i have a problem with a game not running in xp. sim theme park crashes. doesnt have problems under winme(yuck). this is the only game ive come across so far though that actually does not run.
