Xp hard drive goes offline

I have an wl1000gsa1672 hard drive connected to Windows XP , NX7400 system. About once every two days,
it no longer shows up on My Computer and if I toggle the power switch, it will come back up. What can I do to
rule out different causes. Thanks,

the drive is automatically shutdown when idle for a long period of time, the only way to avoid that is to keep it in constant usage.

Go in control panel and in power options and play with the turn off hard disks after option, bring it to never and that wont happen
