Ok two things are confuseing me regarding this os. One is what exactly is the difference between home and pro. And if you where to say *aquire* the corp edition thats been going around, is that home pro or both or neither?

Second thing, I am trying to specify what users and what rights are allowed to what folders, for examp folder Share allows Guests to read it, and Joe Bob to read and execute. In the help it says to go to comp manage shares and right click the share folder, choose properties and specify that sort of thing. When I right click I get help and refresh. No Idea whats going on (though I have a sinking feeling thats how the home vers is supposed to be) any help at all would be great.

I wont comment on illegal versions of windows.
As for the permissions, you will only be able to set permissions the way you mention if your file system is NTFS, fat 32 is either shared or not shared. NTFS will allow MUCH more control.

Got this from Microsoft:

When upgrading to Microsoft Windows XP, your customers have a choice between the Home and Professional Edition. Windows XP Professional Edition contains all of the features of the Home Edition, plus extra features for business and advanced home computing.

Which one is right for your customer?

If your customer answers "yes" to one or more of these questions, make the recommendation that they purchase the Professional Edition of Windows XP:

Do you want to remotely access your PC so you can work with all of your data and applications while away from your office?
Remote Desktop is a feature found only in Professional Edition that allows users to set up their computer for connection from any Windows-based PC. Leave a file at home? Don't want to lug a laptop around? Remote Desktop gives your customers access to their PC from virtually anywhere.

Do you connect to a corporate network?
Windows XP Professional Edition allows you to log on to a Windows Domain, an important capability for people who connect to a corporate network from home.

Do you need to protect sensitive data in files and folders that are stored on your PC?
The Encrypting File System, found only in the Professional Edition, allows you to encrypt your files and folders for added security of sensitive data against theft or hackers. Restricted File Access, also found only in Professional Edition, allows you to restrict access to selected files, applications, and other resources.

Do you need the ability to completely restore your system in the event of a catastrophic failure?
Windows XP Professional Edition provides more robust options for backing up and restoring data than Home Edition.

Would you consider yourself a "Power User?"
Windows XP Professional Edition contains a number of incremental features too numerous to list here. Suffice it to say, users that demand the most from their PC will want to "go Pro." Some additional Pro-only features:

Support for multiple-processor systems
Support for multiple languages
Advanced networking for multiple-PC environments

In addition to all of the great features in Windows XP Professional, your store may have special incentives for your customers to "Go Pro."

If your customer is buying a new PC, tell them about the $75 special rebate for upgrading their PC to Windows XP Professional Edition.
