im just getting a new xp1700+ purely for overclocking reasons. will i need to physically modify the cpu or will i be able to oc with no probs..?
i currently have a xp2400 which barely manages 2.16ghz so i hope to get at least that out of this shiny new 1700...
i have a a7n8x deluxe and 2x256mb pc3200 cl2 ocz ram...
what sort of area would you expect this cpu to clock to?

Get Barton 2500+ instead. It's like the 1700+ when talking about overclocking potential but you also have the extra 256KB cache which will speed up things in a few areas. With the 2500+ you should EASILY hit 2.2GHz on air cooling, probably without even messing with the vcore voltage. Beyond that, it depends on the chip you will get and on your cooling. Maybe you would like to check out <A HREF="http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/archive/topic/20803-1.html" target="_new">this</A> link too.

Btw, no you don't need to physically modify neither the 1700+ or the 2500+, as long as you have an nforce2 board. And yes, overclocking both processors is very simple, although if you head for the 1700+ after all, make sure it's a Tbred-B and not a Palomino or Tbred-A.

you should be able to get ~2.2Ghz easily.

My 1700+ is stable and happy @ 2.25Ghz (196x11.5) 1.6Vcore, using a ThermalTake Volcano7+ on the LOW speed setting.

i have an nforce board and yes i know the barton has more cache but the xp1700 costs less cash (bad pun sorry) its a tbred b AXDA1700DLT3C

What's the stepping & week number? do you know? (the little numbers under the one you stated e.g. JIUHB 0310

You can usually tell from the week of manufacture how good an overclocker it will be (if others have one from that batch that is).

But if you are not going for a Barton then what's the point in upgrading? You are already at 2.16GHz as you said. With the 1700+ you will most likely get 2.2GHz and maybe 2.3GHz on air <b>if you are lucky</b>. So we are talking here about a 6% increase in clock speed. In my opinion this is a pure waste of money. The way I see it save your money for now.

Just for the record, I have an Athlon XP 1800+ @ 2.0GHz and I don't intend to upgrade the CPU ... ever! I see no point in it, upgrading just for 0.3GHz. Sure there will be a small increase in performance (because of the cache too if I get a Barton) but not anything I'll really notice. That's why my next upgrade will be either a Pentium 4 (800MHz FSB), Prescott or A64. It's like upgrading from a Radeon 9500 Pro to a Radeon 9700. There is no point in doing so, is there?

ok first the good news... my new xp1700 arrived this morning at 7.30am!!!! i ordered it yesterday afternoon! and thats just the standard free delivery... i dont care what anybody says THAT is SERVICE!!!!
ok now the tech stuff.. its week 19 03 date which makes it 4months old (approx) we are in week 34 now. i dont remember the code on it and its a 1.5V part. and the bios temp reading is 25c
now the not so good bit..
1. how do i unlock the higher multipliers? i can only get up 12.5
2. the bast*rd wont take 166fsb above a 10x multiplier or 200fsb above 9x
3. at 133fsb i can take it to 12.5 multiplier without probs but i cant access higher multipliers grrrr!

so how do i get the higher multipliers and am i doing something wrong or do i have an exceptionally crap chip?
specs are
xp1700+ ..well duh
2x256mb pc3200cl2 ocz ram
nforce2 (asus deluxe)
zalman cnps6000cu all copper hs with 92mm fan
450w psu

i upgraded because i like tinkering with the comp and i was bored.. so for £35 i thought why not even if it doesnt oc too well (which appears to be the case) i still get to play

I sure know how to spend £35 if I had them extra! And this is not the way for me 😛

Anyway, what is the stepping code of your CPU? (give us all 3 lines of it)

higher multipliers - you have to connect a couple of pins, or one of the bridges. I've seen threads about it here, but I can't remember which ones it was (never done it myself).

Have you tried upping the Vcore? Change it to 1.55 or 1.6V and see if it's happier @166x10 or so. If it is, then keep upping the FSB...

Back on the multiplier issue, you'd be better off not worrying about the lack of higher multis and trying to get more FSB - you have fast RAM after all.

Speaking of RAM, it might be worth running it at really slack timings while you're fiddling with it, just to make sure it's not the RAM crapping out. (you never know - especially with dual channel)

thanx but i know its not the ram crapping out cos i was running at 220mhz at cl2 with my xp2400 so i know its good for it. i tried upping the vcore a little ill try going higher 2nite as i only had 20mins or so this morning to play. ill post the full stepping of the cpu later when i get home and any improved oc i get
ive also seen threads about unlocking the higher multis but i cant be bothered to wade through a years worth of threads across the different forums trying to find it so i figured it was easier to ask... lazy maybe *shrug*

I had a 1700xp (green) and it clocked to 1.750MHz. after that it went pear shaped on my Epox 8K9A2. My current processor is the same as your (2400xp) and I get it to 2.350MHz @ 1,8v. I don`t think you will get that much out of it.
