Ok. I think it be very useful to add the following to section 1.2.1
of the Guidebook: "Be very careful whilst in Teryino, as killing an
inhabitant may cause everyone else to become hostile. This will make
getting the quests difficult or impossible."

Regards,
Jo.

A similar warning would apply to Dwarftown. And every monster that
makes quests available. Terinyo might be worth mentioning
specifically since it is the first location many PCs visit. Thoughts?

Not sure. Killing somebody by accident in Terinyo early in the game
would be very unusual, since you always get the "Do you really want
to..." prompt except under very special circumstances (true berserker).
Moreover, misdirected spells or missiles should also be a rare thing
given that no hostile creatures are ever generated there in a normal game.

So even without any warning, the player will likely suspect that killing
townspeople will have negative consequences, although he will not *know*
it. On the other hand, it is very easy to find out for a curious player,
since it can be tried out so early in the game.

The player is most likely to "accidentally" kill somebody in Terinyo
when hunting for farmer corpses for Gaab-Baay, so if a warning is
considered helpful, I'd rather add it at the place where that quest is
described.

Perhaps HMV should also be mentioned, as its not specific to Terinyo, and
there are farmers right in HMV for the slaughtering...

Anyone who wants to become neutral quickly for skill acquisition purposes
will probably do so here as well (its the first thing I do every time I
start a lawful), so it might be worthwhile to include in both places.

However, anyone doing the Gaab-Baay quests or changing alignment to get
Pick Pockets/training will almost certainly already be aware there are
penalty for killing villagers, its a very common concept in fantasy games.

I considered mentioning the HMV in my original reply. I am not sure
if killing a non-hostile there results in the whole town becoming
hostile - I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

Yes, the main reason I'm reluctant to incorporate it. It would
involve significant work if implemented for all cases where this can
occur, while being pretty obvious to most players.

It doesn't.

Point taken. The only reason I suggested the addition was because I
did kill someone in the village somehow and got totally stuck. No
alarm went off and I don't recall being asked "Are I was sure?" by the
game. Even if I had have been asked ADOM is the first game of this
type I've played so I didn't know until very recently that there'd be
a penalty. Maybe a note of Terinyo in particular could be made in the
FAQ?

Cheers,
Jo.

The "Are you sure?" message is supressed if you are playing in true
berserker mode, otherwise it is always generated. The FAQ as it
exists now mentions 'C'hatting to NPCs in Terinyo. There is another
more obscure FAQ that I can't locate right now which mentions that
while it is possible to complete the game in hack 'n' slash mode by
killing everything that moves, it is not the most prudent course.
Perhaps that could be added to the official FAQ - although it is
implied in section 3.5.4 . Whether an addition should be made is up
to Malte. I would not anticipate any changes until the next revision,
which will probably be quite some time in the future.
